This is a seasonal position currently projected to end in December 2023. • Maintaining strict observance of evolving state and local COVID-related guidelines

  • Ensuring all visitors explore the site in a safe way: to protect themselves, other visitors, and the site itself

  • Answering interpretive questions about the history of the site, and leading occasional 3-4 minute orientation talks to scheduled group tours

  • Leading tours of the specialty areas of the site (the crypt, the gallery, and the bell-ringing chamber)

  • Offering help with directions, wayfinding, or general points of interest about the site and neighborhood

  • Assisting with the cleaning and care of the site to maintain a tidy and professional work environment

  • Other interpretive and operational duties may be required as needed

Qualifications/Job Requirements:

  • Must be comfortable and able to climb narrow and steep stairs and paths as well as conduct tours in confined spaces

  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time

  • Ability to tolerate extreme temperatures

  • As we move toward more and more digital and virtual interpretation and teaching, educators must also be comfortable on camera and with being recorded on video formats.

About this Organization:

300 Years. Two Lanterns. One Revolution.

The enduring fame of Old North Church began on the evening of April 18, 1775, when church sexton Robert Newman and Vestryman Capt. John Pulling, Jr. climbed the steeple of Old North Church and held high two lanterns as a signal from Paul Revere that the British were marching to Lexington and Concord by sea across the Charles River. This fateful event ignited the American Revolution. Old North Church is Boston’s oldest surviving church building and welcomes over 150,000 visitors each year as one of the Freedom Trail’s most visited historical sites.

Old North Illuminated (ONI) inspires active citizenship and courageous, compassionate leadership by interpreting and preserving the Old North Church & Historic Site. ONI serves a wide audience by creating meaningful experiences through educational outreach, site-specific programming, and historical analysis. Old North Illuminated (formerly Old North Foundation of Boston, Inc) was established in 1991 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization independent of Christ Church in the City of Boston (the Episcopal congregation of Old North Church).
