Music Director
Description:
We
are seeking a music director who has a musical vision for the ensemble and the
skills and experience to achieve the highest performance level possible from
the group. We hope to select our new director in the spring of 2023, with a
start date in early September. This position will be compensated with a per-cycle stipend commensurate with experience level.
The Music Director reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the fulfillment of the ensemble’s artistic potential. Specifically, the Music Director is responsible for programming and artistic production, and for the selection, development, and composition of the ensemble, subject to any relevant policies established by the Board of Directors. As artistic leader, the Music Director should build and sustain the ensemble’s visibility and involvement in the community, and is expected to work closely with group members and the Board in carrying out these responsibilities.
Qualifications:
The
successful candidate will have:
•
Experience in
developing imaginative programming, using diverse repertoire, and exploring a
variety of directions in music-making;
•
Ability to commit
to an early September through early May weekly rehearsal schedule with a
minimum of four full ensemble performances annually, all in greater Boston;
•
Musical and
personal leadership skills, including ability to motivate and elicit the best
efforts of musicians learning challenging and unfamiliar repertoire;
•
Deep
understanding of the legacy, repertoire, opportunities, and challenges of
musical performance on brass instruments;
•
Ability to
inspire and communicate musically and orally with audiences both on and off the
stage;
•
Appreciation for
the non-profit status of the organization and willingness to operate within
budgetary limits;
•
Willingness to
represent the ensemble in the life of the community, support fundraising, and
participate in the promotional endeavors of Bay Colony Brass.

About this Organization:
Bay Colony Brass is one of the few large brass ensembles (or brass choirs) of its kind in the United States. Composed of twenty players, the group performs a broad range of repertoire spanning five centuries of brass and orchestral music, vocal music, Broadway shows, and even the occasional pop song. We play three sets of concerts a year plus two Christmas programs at various sites in the Boston area. Bay Colony Brass is a volunteer organization and registered 501c3 nonprofit in Massachusetts.
