Overview

The Multicultural Arts Center in Cambridge is seeking a part time Artistic Director to execute an artistic vision to advance our mission.

The ideal candidate will have a background in the visual or performing arts and have a strong commitment to anti-racism, equity and ethical leadership. They will bring excitement towards the transformational opportunity to develop and execute an artistic vision, a willingness to support and nurture emerging artists, as well as interest in/experience with working with professional artists and companies. An ability to hold strong boundaries while also remaining collaborative is an asset, as is some knowledge of Cambridge and the history of the surrounding neighborhoods.

Who We Are

The Multicultural Arts Center in Cambridge supports diversity, equity and justice through the presentation of visual and performing arts by serving as a venue, producer, and presenter of arts programming. Founded in 1978, we present multicultural visual and performing arts programs to educate the community about diversity and make our facility available to artists or groups that might not otherwise have access to a professionally equipped facility or the cultural mainstream.

The Center works in partnership with the City of Cambridge, local artists and organizations, and currently houses theCambridge Community Center for the Arts, a resident partner non-profit that hosts community arts programming at the Multicultural Arts Center.

The Opportunity

This newly created role requires both a creative background and vision and a commitment to community engagement and cross-cultural artistic expression.The Artistic Director will be specifically responsible for curating a calendar of performances, engaging local artists and community stakeholders, overseeing the execution of events, and representing the Center to local officials, donors, and the media.

This is a co-leadership role with the current Managing Director. Together these roles form the executive team responsible for the Center’s financial stability and operations; maintaining an inclusive and collaborative culture; presenting quality visual and performing arts programs that advance our mission; and providing critical information and analysis to the Board of Directors.

This is a part-time position (20 hours/week), and scope of the role would be scaled to align with this allotted time. There is opportunity for growth commensurate with the annual budget.

Compensation will be between $27-$30/hour, or $28,080 - $31,200 annually.

This role has the opportunity for some remote work. In office time is expected to support meaningful in-person interactions with staff as well as for performances, meetings, tours, and other on and off-site engagements.

Qualifications:

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • experience as artist or producer in one or more creative arts disciplines;

  • a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in artistic programming and in the workplace;

  • strong verbal and written communication skills;

  • the ability to work in a deadline-oriented, fast-paced environment that demands ongoing multi-tasking.

Strong candidates will bring a sense of humor along with curiosity and a commitment to listening and learning; enthusiasm for meeting and engaging with people; and the ability to work proactively to address challenges and leverage resources to creatively solve problems.
