Assistant Director, Gallery Teaching and Collections Training

Description:

Under the direction of the Director of Museum Learning and part of the Learning Community Engagement Department. The Assistant Director of Gallery Teaching and Collections Training performs a wide variety of high-level responsibilities overseeing volunteer training and the delivery of quality guided in-gallery and online experiences at the MFA.

The Assistant Director of Gallery Teaching and Collections Training is a learning leader who builds, promotes, and manages a learning culture across MFA volunteer guiding groups. The Assistant Director ensures that guided experiences align with MFA institutional values and its strategic plan. The Assistant Director is responsible for preparing volunteer guides to lead high quality, inclusive, and responsive experiences for all museum visitors.

Essential Functions:

Guided Experiences

  • Oversees the Manager of Group Learning in the development, assessment, and adaption and/or revision as necessary of K-12 guided tour content to ensure alignment to K-12 school curriculum frameworks and the needs of students
  • Develops, assesses, and adapts and/or revises MFA drop-in tour programs and other adult guided programs to ensure relevance to MFA visitors and connection to the MFA’s values
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to ensure guided programs meet the needs of all audiences

Gallery Teaching Training and Learning


  • Determine the strategy and approach for training volunteer guides leading tours and other guided experiences in the galleries and online
    • Organize and maintain a training structure that supports the variety of guiding groups and museum audiences
  • Design, implement, and facilitate high-quality training programs for guides on teaching practice, MFA collection objects, and special exhibitions. Works in collaboration with the Manager of Accessibility on training Access Guides.
    • Develop training centering the MFA’s commitment to IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access) as it pertains to the collection and visitor experience
    • Manage the training calendar
    • Design materials and resources for training including digital resources, at times in collaboration with volunteer guides
    • Serves as primary supervisor of adult group guides at the Museum in their role as guides
  • Develop formative and summative assessments to ensure guides have acquired the skills and knowledge to facilitate appropriate experiences for their audiences
    • Identify and address skill gaps through a staff-led review process focused on touring content and teaching approaches
    • Supervise the Manager of Group Learning in ongoing evaluation of the guided experience at the MFA, both the guides and the experience of groups
    • Identify any guides who need additional evaluation and supports and facilitate their next steps in collaboration with the Director of Volunteer Experience
  • Measures effectiveness of training programs and creates course evaluations
    • Develops qualitative assessments of effectiveness of learning in individual courses to evaluate guides’ ability to integrate new information and techniques into their tours

Collection Training for All Volunteers

  • Identify and collaborate with internal and external experts to ensure a diversity of voices and experiences are present in training
  • Design, implement, and facilitate training sessions about collections, special exhibitions, and audience (i.e. adult learners, students) to support volunteers across the Museum in roles beyond leading guided group tours.
  • Partner with colleagues who oversee other volunteer groups and align collection training with other training
  • Partner with the Senior Director of Belonging and Inclusion to align collections/gallery teaching trainings, and feedback/evaluations process for guiding, with ongoing IDEA training for volunteers and other relevant initiatives
  • Collaborate with the MFA Gallery Instructor Advisory Board Education Committee, the MFA Associates and Senior Associates leadership, Volunteer Leadership from other groups, and Director of Volunteer Experience to synchronize programming with broader training initiatives and institutional goals

Secondary Functions

  • Work closely with Volunteer Leadership and serve on the Volunteer Working Group to align all work with volunteers in learning programming at the MFA
  • Conduct research on the MFA collection and changing exhibitions
  • Maintain knowledge of best practices in teaching, with an emphasis on inclusive practice and curriculum. Maintain knowledge of best practices in student and visitors experience in museums


Salary and Schedule:

Full-Time Salary, 35 hours per week

$65,000 - $70,000

Qualifications:


  • Masters in Museum Studies, Education, Art History or Art Education, or the equivalent in experience and knowledge of these fields
  • Minimum of five to seven years of experience working within an educational or museum setting, including leading tours (or similar informal education experience) and working with students/youth and adults
  • Demonstrated experience working with volunteers, including training and motivating them, as well as dealing with difficult situations
  • Demonstrated experience working on inclusion, diversity, equity, and access in education
  • Must be creative and strategic in developing high-quality learning programs for students, teachers, adults, and museum educators
  • Ability to stand for up to three hours (or use of a wheelchair)

Leading Attributes

  • Excellent teaching and presentation skills
  • Experience acting as a supervisor for both staff and volunteers
  • Experience managing budgets
  • Experience with online teaching and learning tools a plus
  • Ability to manage multiple and complex projects while maintaining high standards and accuracy
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Previous training in Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) preferred
  • Superb customer service and follow-through skills
  • Commitment to collaboration and willingness to be part of a multifaceted team
