Manager, Donor Relations


Boston Children’s Museum is seeking is a mission-driven, warm, and relationship-builder who finds excitement in executing fun and spectacular fundraising strategies across our organization. The ideal candidate has interest in representing Boston Children’s Museum in the marketplace to qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward annual and mid-level donors, and align benefactor interests with the strategic objectives of the institution. A strong background in annul giving and relevant experience with non-profit campaign, fundraising, marketing, and research. Has the ability to maintain a high level of poise and professionalism in all circumstances.

The Manager, Donor Relations reporting directly to the Director, Donor Relations is responsible for managing key areas of development including the Annual Fund, high-level donor events, and frontline fundraising. Lead the planning and execute of key development events (i.e., the Silly Soiree Children’s Ball, house parties, and other fundraising/campaign-related events).

The Manager, Donor Relations plays a key role in the coordination of fundraising initiatives and outreach by working closely with the Director of Donor Relations, the VP of Development, the President & CEO, and with high level volunteers and other members of the development team.


  • Annual Funds: Manage a comprehensive annual fund program with measurable goals, benchmarks, projects, schedules, and budgets. Develop and maintain annual appeals and communications calendars, direct marketing program and collateral materials for donor outreach, and works with internal and external colleagues to ensure coordination and execution. Prepare dashboards, data reports and database analysis/recommendations for improvements to direct marketing and fundraising initiatives, including AF giving reports and open rates of communications. Develops and maintains efficient and strategic donor retention plans (i.e., recurring gifts, matching gifts, stewardship/incentive programs, and personalized communications). Prepares timely acknowledgements and steward donors. Prepares and reviews lists for the annual report for accuracy. Prepares reports, gift terms/pledge agreements, and other donor documents as needed.

  • Events and Special Projects: Lead the planning and execution of key development events, including the responsibilities of logistics, committee management, sponsorship acquisition, materials production & coordination, volunteer staffing coordination. Supports the efforts of the development team and other Museum colleagues with events as needed

  • Individual Giving: Assist with developing strategic individual giving donor acquisition plans with the Director of Donor Relations and VP of Development. Create pipelines of potential leadership to major gifts donors with careful management, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of annual fund, mid-level, and new donors. Develop and maintain personal prospect list of annual to leadership gift level individual donors. Network with professional colleagues and attend key events/meetings for the purposes of establishing a presence, learning best-practices, building new relationships for the Museum. In coordination with development staff, help build and maintain strategic fundraising initiatives (i.e., Young Professionals Council), especially as it relates to new donor acquisition and volunteer engagement. Support the President’s fundraising efforts, along with the Director of Donor Relations and VP by maintaining the President’s call list, donor briefings, materials preparation, etc.

  • Volunteer Management: Identify, recruit, train, and motivate volunteers supporting fundraising efforts. Serve as the main contact for volunteers and committee work related to major development events and initiatives, coordinating fluidly with key stakeholders. Support Director of Donor Relations in managing the logistics and stewardship of President’s Council, Development Committee, and other key volunteer groups in partnership with the VP. Strategize with internal colleagues and board members on donor engagement and solicitation. Leverage board and volunteer contacts toward introductions/visitations of new donor contacts.

  • Campaign: Work closely with the VP of Development and Director of Donor relations on cultivation and stewardship of prospects with the capacity/affinity to support the Campaign. Meet with the team and key stakeholders regarding all cultivation and special events in support of the campaign, including President’s Council meetings, Development committee meetings, cultivation dinners, kick-off and recognition events as needed. Manage prospect tracking system and fundraising dashboard management. Research and manage a portfolio of mid-level campaign prospects. Write correspondences, create reports, proposals and marketing collateral as needed.

  • Prospect Research, Tracking, and Reporting: Responsible for tracking moves management of AF and other campaign supporters, both in Raiser’s Edge and with other tracking instruments such as SmartSheet. Research new prospects as needed. Maintain all relevant information in the Raiser’s Edge database. Create and share reports with the key stakeholders.

  • Development – General and Other Duties: All members of the development staff is expected to work collectively to ensure that all goals and objectives are met. This includes participation in joint efforts such as telephone coverage, staffing of events, mailings, filing, etc. May supervise development interns as neededFlexibility required as responsibilities may shift with department needs. Other duties as assigned.

  • Appreciation of the Museum’s mission and ability to be an effective spokesperson
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree required
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in non-profit campaign, fundraising, marketing, research, corporate social responsibility or applicable business or professional experience
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and networking skills with large groups as well as with individuals are essential. Strong relationship builder.
  • High-level volunteer management preferable but not required.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of poise and professionalism in all circumstances.
  • Demonstrated ability to take primary responsibility for diverse number of projects and to complete them in a timely manner with limited supervision.
  • Ability to balance and prioritize multiple tasks with speed and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a diverse organization committed to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, entrepreneurial thinking and problem solving.
  • Strong communications, planning and organizational skills. Excellent written and verbal skills, both by phone and in-person. Excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong working knowledge of common computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge database software is strongly desirable; must be comfortable with data, reporting tools and related tools.
  • Must work collegially and with utmost integrity.
