Graphic Designer


The Graphic Designer is a key supporting position in a three-person design team reporting to the Director of Creative Services. The position is responsible for the execution of assigned projects for the BSO, Boston Pops, Tanglewood and Tanglewood Learning Institute brands as well as their supporting departments and works within a professional design process outlined by the Director of Creative Services.


  • Support design projects as directed by the Director of Creative Services. Project may include:
    • Weekly/daily BSO ads for the subscription campaign, single ticket campaign, and all BSO related events, programs and promotions
    • Weekly/daily Boston Pops, Holiday Pops, Tanglewood and BSO NOW web and print advertising and all related events, programs and promotions including group sales
  • Meet the BSO’s brand standards and general standards for quality with design effectiveness evaluated via digital media analytics (e.g. click through rates), occasional market research testing and customer feedback
  • Follow art direction and guidelines for all projects to create layouts that meet professional design standards, business and communications objectives, requirements of each brand and that take into account the unique characteristics of the target audience for each piece
  • Deliver projects on schedule and within budget
  • Organize and maintain print ad files on the server, assist Project Manager with trafficking work as needed, incorporate stakeholder feedback into layouts and provide final layouts to BSO department stakeholders
  • In addition to Marketing, service BSO departments including: Development, Education & Community Engagement, Tanglewood Music Center, Corporate Sponsorships, Group Sales, Event Services, Publications, Archives, Human Resources, Box Office, Retail and Facilities
  • Produce projects for all brands and departments including but not limited to print and web ads, brochures, programs, flyers, three-sheets, on-site displays, co-promotional and multi-brand pieces, billboards, lamp post banners, transit signs, taxi tops, banners, billboards, invitations, direct mail envelopes, order forms, and letters; support digital, email, projection and broadcast based-projects with static and motion graphics as needed.

  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design or related field required
  • 3+ years professional graphic design experience required
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines
  • Proficiency in Mac OS, Adobe Creative Suite
  • Experience in presentation software such as PowerPoint / Keynote a plus.
  • Knowledge of four-color process separation, offset printing and preparation of web graphics
  • Knowledge of and interest in the performing arts are a plus

The Boston Symphony Orchestra, Inc., was founded in 1881 and is comprised of major sub-organizations including Boston Symphony Orchestra, Tanglewood Music Center, Days in the Arts, Tanglewood Festival Chorus, the Boston Pops, Esplanade Pops, and the Chamber Players.

The Boston Symphony Orchestra performs in historic Symphony Hall from October through May under the direction of Maestro Andris Nelsons. The Boston Pops Orchestra, under conductor Keith Lockhart, performs in Symphony Hall during May and June in addition to, annual series Holiday Pops concerts in December. In July and August the orchestra performs at Tanglewood, its summer home in the magnificent Berkshires of western Massachusetts. The administrative offices of the BSO employ approximately 175 people.
