Experienced Rental Workshop Luthier


Full-time experienced luthiers needed to join our Rental Workshop in Waltham, MA. Work will include setup and repair of violins, violas, and cellos in the rental fleet. Bass work may also be available for qualified candidates.

All rental instruments go through a rigorous multi-step quality control process which includes a play-check and tonal adjustment to be sure all of our instruments are both easy to play, and sound their best.

Located just west of Boston, a cultural hotspot booming with gifted musicians of all styles, Johnson String Instrument offers some of the most exceptional services in the country. In addition to our highly-regarded rental program and teacher services, we offer a world-class restoration shop, and an extensive sales collection. Our staff is passionate, talented, and committed to teamwork.

Applicants should have a minimum of two years of experience working in a repair workshop, and be proficient in all basic to intermediate level repair work (carving bridges, adjusting soundposts, fitting and bushing pegs, crack and edge repair, and solid touch-up skills). Recent graduates from a known violin making school may be considered if proficient in basic level repair and setup work. Strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and ability to work as part of a team are essential!

FULL-TIME: 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, daytime (daily work schedule is flexible).

This position offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes health and dental insurance, matching 401(k), long-term disability insurance, paid time off, and vacation accruals. Voluntary (employee-paid) benefits are also available.

Opportunities for high level training in our restoration workshop will be available as part of this position.

Salary $18-$20/hr (commensurate with experience and education)
