PT Managing Director for Classical Music Management Company

Ariel Artists, a Boston-based artist management company (, seeks a part-time Managing Director to steer the company both artistically and operationally during this pivotal moment in the performing arts world. The ideal applicant possesses both powerful artistic vision, as well as demonstrated experience in running a company, including designing growth strategy, directing a road map with bench marks articulated across multiple company branches, soliciting the expertise and empowering the participation of stakeholders (staff, artists, presenting partners, management colleagues), and maintaining a thriving, enriching, mutually respectful company culture.

The Managing Director will report to the company's Founder & Director, and will be responsible for overseeing 3-4 staff members, contractors, and interns working in booking, concert advancing (tour managing), and marketing. The Managing Director is also responsible for securing larger-scale partnerships with international touring networks and management companies in international territories.

In addition to directing the Ariel staff, the Managing Director will also be in frequent contact with Ariel's roster of artists, including advising them and supporting them in their career strategy and further development. Our hope is that the Managing Director will activate their artistic vision to expand the membership, relevance, and reach of the Ariel roster. We equally hope that the MD's strategy -- supported by the arts sector's recovery -- will allow this position to expand into a full-time spot in the near future. The salary below reflects the full-time range ($50-70k).

An applicant for the Managing Director position must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in the classical music management world, including a minimum of 2 years experience directing multiple arms of a company and being directly responsible for its financial, developmental, and artistic growth. The Managing Director will be expected to come with a considerable booking history and trusted concert presenter contacts in the industry.

In addition to the above, applicants must demonstrate:

  • strong leadership skills
  • ability to design large-scale strategy and imagine its achievable components by area
  • excellent communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • experience motivating teams of people and inspiring contribution of individual expertise
  • ingenuity in problem-solving
  • strong negotiation skills
  • a natural love of networking
  • exceptional organizational capacity
  • technological savvy
  • reliability, responsibility, and self-motivation
  • positive attitude and upbeat approach to encountered difficulties
  • Ariel staff members work primarily from their home offices in metro Boston. Staff members are required to maintain their own up-to-date office equipment – including cell phone, computer, high-speed internet, printer/scanner – as well as ensure their ability to work from quiet home office environments where they are undisturbed during work hours. We do require Ariel staff to live in the Boston Metropolitan Region, as the company anticipates restoring (once it is safe to do so) regular in-person staff meetings and work sessions.
