Street Performer Monitor (seasonal, 3 positions)


The Cambridge Arts Council (Cambridge Arts) promotes and presents high-quality community-based arts programming for the benefit of artists, residents, and visitors to the City of Cambridge. Cambridge Arts is currently seeking applicants for the position of Street Performer Monitor. The Street Performer Monitor(s) will work under the direction of and report to the Director of Community Arts and Executive Director.

Role and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Act as the official liaison between Cambridge Arts and performers, residents, and members of the business community in matters pertaining to the Street Performer Program
  • Ensure that all active performers on public property have and display valid city-issued Performer Permits
  • Enforce the articles of the City of Cambridge Street Performer Ordinance (Ord. No. 1176) as outlined in the Sidewalk Use Ordinance(Chapter 12.16, Section 12.16.170)
  • Enforce and monitor appropriate COVID-19 safety precautions as identified by City and State health policies
  • Manage sound levels of performers using a calibrated decibel reader and maintain the decibel reader while it is in your possession
  • Mediate performer conflicts and respond to program-related complaints and concerns as necessary and at the request of the Director of Community Arts and Cambridge Arts staff as needed
  • Routinely monitor phone ‘hotline’ and social communication platforms for complaints/comments from performers, citizens, and local businesses
  • Submit weekly reports on performer/monitor activity to the Director of Community Arts and Executive Director

Physical demands: Street Performer Monitors are expected to spend between 10-20 hours per week outdoors during all weather conditions to conduct routine monitoring, mediate performer conflicts, and respond to program-related complaints. While performing the duties of this job, Monitors are frequently required to sit, stand, move, talk, and listen. Must have sufficient mobility to travel throughout the city, primarily in and around Harvard Square.

Work environment: Performs duties inside and outside of buildings. Exposure to all weather conditions. Exposure to moderate noise level from music, other live performances, and ambient sounds.

HOURS OF WORK: 10-20 hours per week, May through October, including evenings and weekends.

RATE: $ 16.65 /Hour
