Residence Hall Director


Massachusetts College of Art and Design is the only freestanding public college of art and design in the United States. The college is nationally known for offering broad access to quality professional arts education, accompanied by a strong general education in the liberal arts. A major cultural force in Boston, in addition to its undergraduate and graduate degree programs, MassArt also offers acclaimed public programs, including exhibitions, lectures, outreach activities and events, and education programs for adults and youth.

The Residence Hall Director is an 11 month (48 week position with 4 weeks off in either June or July) professional live-in position and includes the management and overall operation of a Residence Hall during the academic year and residential life responsibilities during the summer. Our Residence Hall Director positions include the joint management of neighboring institutions leasing space. While all responsibilities listed are important to the role of the Residence Hall Director, the following are considered essential functions:

  • Supervise paraprofessional staff
  • This is a live-on position that must maintain a presence on campus including evenings and weekends
  • Fulfill duty requirements and counsel residents on behavior that violates College policies
  • Respond to all residence halls when needed
  • Oversee the safety and security of residents and the residence halls
  • Complete essential administrative duties
  • Ensure that affirmative action, equal opportunity, and diversity are integrally tied to all actions and decisions and are in accordance with the Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity/Diversity Plan
  • Participate in committees and plan Academic Year College-Wide events as assigned.
  • Develop/Coordinate Program/Events
  • Engage in direct/indirect summer residential life program management

This is a full time live-on position and, as such, the Residence Hall Director is expected to have significant presence in the residence halls, including on evenings and weekends. The position is a designated essential personnel staff position which means (absent of extreme circumstances) all scheduled work is to take place on-campus. It is also expected that live-on staff members understand that “live-on” means that you will carry yourself in a professional manner when on campus. Students easily observe if professional staff members are gone every weekend or spend much of their time outside of work hours off campus. Professional staff members will always be viewed as such by students, even when they are not actually working.

Summary of Duties

Student Development

  • Support programming model and philosophy by planning, organizing, and directing student activities and programs within the residence hall.
  • Explain and executive MassArt community standards, residence hall policies, expectations, and regulations to individual students and groups in the residence halls. Be knowledgeable of academic and college policies.
  • Build relationships with residents in order to facilitate referrals to appropriate academic and/or administrative departments.
  • Provide appropriate counseling to students and make referrals.
  • Serve as a Community Standards Officer hearing officer for conduct matters concerning students residing in the residence halls.
  • Develop, coordinate and implement educational programs on topics related to issues of social justice.

Student Supervision and Training

  • Supervise and establish performance goals for paraprofessional staff in the building.
  • Supervise (if appointed) leadership positions within the Department of Housing and Residence Life (i.e Peer Conduct Advisor, Program Coordinator)
  • Conduct weekly supervisory meetings, monthly staff development sessions, and Social Justice Seminars with staff on a group and individual basis.
  • Evaluate paraprofessional staff.
  • Assist the paraprofessional staff in dealing with student concerns.
  • Recruit and select paraprofessional staff.
  • Collaborate with other College members to provide paraprofessional staff in-service training.

Administrative Duties

  • Ensure facility maintenance within the residence halls.
  • Coordinate coverage and procedures for the Residence Hall Director office.
  • Supervise the administrative duties associated with the operation of the residence halls (i.e. mail, posting, bulletin boards, etc.).
  • Supervise the issuance, collection, and control of room and building keys.
  • Maintain appropriate management records and provide written reports and summaries as requested.
  • Coordinate the opening and closing of the residence halls.
  • Assist with room selection and coordinate/approve all room changes with the Housing office.
  • Determine paraprofessional and professional staff duty rosters for residence halls.
  • Provide professional staff on-call coverage as required during evening and weekend hours during the year (this includes all breaks and summer coverage). This responsibility will occur within the 11 month period of employment.
  • Maintain regular office hours.

Neighboring School/Shared Space

  • Work with partnering institutions that share MassArt housing and schools from whom MassArt leases space
  • Collaborate with partnering institutions’ offices to determine disciplinary sanctions, meetings, and procedures.
  • Set-up regular meetings with partner institutions to discuss building operations and issues related to Residence Life.
  • Establish check-in procedures and staff utilization for check-in and check-out of partner institutions students.
  • Indirect responsibilities including supervision/support/training to the partner institutions’ resident assistants staffed in the building. If the schedule permits, take part in partner institutions’ Orientation events.
  • Communicate weekly on issues with partner institutions.
  • Other duties that may be assigned given the partnership.

Other Responsibilities

  • Represent the Office of Housing and Residence Life on committees as required during the academic year.
  • Participate in Residence Life office functions (i.e. room selection, staff selection, etc.) and College functions as deemed necessary by the Director of Housing and Residence Life.
  • Participate in the determination of new program directions for the Office of Housing and Residence Life.
  • Be an active participant in events run by the Colleges of the Fenway.
  • Investigate policy violations that may involve policies related to the Equal Opportunity, Diversity, and Affirmative Action Plan.
  • Participate in and assist in planning College-wide events (including but not limited to) Commencement, Orientation, opening/closing of Residence Halls.
  • Attend professional training workshops provided by Housing and Residence Life, the Office of Student Development, and the Colleges of the Fenway.

Property Management Company

The Property Management Company and Massachusetts College of Art and Design
have an on-going partnership regarding the maintenance of the on-campus housing
program. The property manager has an office within the Artists’ Residence and the
Tree House Residence Hall and is responsible for security, facilities/maintenance,
summer leasing/conferencing and damage billing. It is the responsibility of the
Residence Hall Director and the Property Manager to work together to establish clear
guidelines and to follow policies that have been established through Massachusetts
College of Art and Design.
  • Along with the property management company, perform inspections of student rooms to maintain appropriate standards of health, safety, and maintenance.
  • Report needed repairs, and follow-ups to maintenance staff and Property Manager.
  • Work with the security officers within the residence halls regarding building emergencies.
  • Report any staff policy violations to the Property Manager.
  • Report damage throughout the year.

Functional/Divisional Team Assignment

Additional responsibilities will be assigned by the Senior Director of Housing and Residence Life, the Vice President and AVP/Dean of Students. Functional team/individual assignments included are meant to be managed during the 11 month contracted period of employment. They are subject to change and are not limited to:

  • Coordinate Winter Resident Assistant Training
  • Assist in the coordination of August Paraprofessional Training
  • Social Justice Seminar Series for Paraprofessional Staff
  • Facilitate the Housing Attendant program with Admissions Office
  • Coordinate and Oversee Pre-Semester Housing Program
  • Coordinate and Oversee Summer Youth Program
  • Supervision of Programming Coordinator Advisor
  • Supervision of Peer Conduct Advisor
  • Coordinate and Oversee Resident Assistant Course
  • Coordinate and Oversee Resident Assistant Staff Socials
  • Coordinate and Oversee Resident Assistant Appreciation Day
  • Oversee and/or coordinate Residence Life survey administration, assessment and summary reports

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree with 2 years of post-baccalaureate experience in residence life/housing with 1 of those years being live-in or Masters in student affairs or related field with 1 year live-in post-baccalaureate/professional residence life experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with issues of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
  • Participate in On call professional duty rotation-post bachelor in a supervisory capacity
  • Student staff supervision
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects up to 15 lbs
  • Hearing Officer for Student Conduct

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel, Counseling, or a related field
  • 3 years post baccalaureate Residence Director Experience
  • Training in Inclusivity and issues of Social Justice
  • Crisis Management/Case Management
  • Experience in conduct management
  • Experience as a mandated reporter
  • Title IX investigation experience
  • Spanish Speaking
