Summer Forest Camp Instructor

Seeking Forest Instructors for Summer, 2021

Friends of the Fells Forest Camp summer programming provides nature-based, experiential learning opportunities for children ages 4-12.

Our program engages children in self-guided explorations of the forest, helping to develop their curiosity, critical thinking, and sense of connection with nature.

Our dedicated instructors provide positive and enriching learning opportunities for children through unstructured time-in-nature, opportunistic nature interpretation, and by encouraging self-directed learning and exploration.

The Friends of the Fells is seeking program instructors for our 2021 Fells Forest Camp programming (Monday, June 28th through Friday, August 27th) to facilitate the morning, afternoon, and full day sessions of the following programs: Forest Kindergarten (ages 4-5), Forest Explorers (ages 5+-7), and Forest Adventurers (ages 8-12).

Each of these programs is designed to meaningfully connect children with nature through experiential learning, and unstructured outdoor play. We are seeking applicants who are passionate about both nature and children to lead this outdoor summer program. If you are interested in leading any of these programs, or to read more about them, please visit our Forest Camp web pages for details.

All summer 2021 programming will be based from Medford High School, Medford MA, and the adjacent Lawrence Woods section of the Middlesex Fells (accessible via MBTA bus routes or a 1.2 mile walk from the West Medford MBTA commuter rail station).

While session times vary according to program, age, and registration, leaders will generally need to be available to work between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm Monday through Friday — with some exceptions.

Hours and compensation
This is a seasonal part-time position, hours vary (part-time and full-time schedules available), but summer programming is held Mon. – Fri., 8:30 am to 4 pm for all sessions. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.

  • Certification or willing to become CPR/First Aid certified by June 28th

  • Demonstrated understanding of experiential education concepts and methodologies

  • Energy and enthusiasm for playing, communicating, and simply being outdoors with young children
  • Skill with photography also a plus

Physical Demands

Fells Forest Camp is structured to be a wholly outdoors program where children spend their time exploring the trails of the Middlesex Fells Reservation. As such, Forest Instructors will be required to perform certain physical tasks regularly as an essential part of their position: the instructor will be required to walk and hike across uneven, rocky, and frequently muddy terrain daily and in all summer weather conditions. Hiking will often include significant elevation changes, and groups will cover multiple miles in each session. While on the trails, instructors must wear or carry a bag or backpack containing group equipment and supplies. Instructors will be required to talk, sit, stand, and occasionally run for short distances during their time in the forest. Instructors may be required to bend, kneel, crawl, climb, push and pull, lift, and carry small children or children’s equipment (if necessary). Instructors must have the ability to observe (see and hear) campers and their surroundings from distances upwards of 150 ft. in a wooded environment. Instructors will often be required to perform their tasks while wet, muddy, dirty, or otherwise affected by outdoor conditions.
