Founded in 1974, Mass Humanities is a private non-profit organization that serves as the statewide affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. We create opportunities for the people of Massachusetts to transform their lives and build a more equitable commonwealth through the humanities. This position can be full-time remote.

Mass Humanities is seeking a Program Officer. Specific duties will include the following:

  • Communicate Mass Humanities’ (MH) mission, priorities, grant opportunities and grant parameters to potential applicants.
  • Lead key programs, coordinating outreach, logistics, and evaluation for programs that may include Clemente Course in the Humanities, Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibitions, and Reading Frederick Douglass Together.
  • Support Executive Director and Director of Grants to identify and develop strategic partnerships.
  • Work closely with grantees to identify, implement ways to strengthen future Mass Humanities funding opportunities.
  • Participate in review of proposals and support grant recipients through the life of the funded project.
  • Contribute to the formulation and implementation of grant-making strategies, including the development of new grant opportunities, outreach and/or partnerships.
  • Work with finance and administrative staff to ensure efficient, timely administration of notifications, payments, and final reporting.
  • Attend MH-funded events to represent organization with grantee institution, other stakeholders, and report observations at meetings and in program officer reports.
  • Support and/or lead workshops with applicants and grantees to explain application processes, build skills, and coordinate outreach efforts.
  • Adhere to National Endowment for the Humanities, Mass Cultural Council, and other funder compliance requirements related to grantees, developing new grant lines, and reporting
  • Provide information to development and communications departments to enhance opportunities and resources for MH and its grantees.
Qualifications:

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of relevant grant or program experience in a non-profit setting.
  • Teaching/coaching skills for work with applicants,
  • Prior experience in community outreach, evaluation, or education is a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills. Strong organization skills
  • Excellent computer skills including excel required.
  • Track record of strong professional relationships and collaboration skills.
  • Deep understanding of the humanities, public project development and planning, and non-profit organizations.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) is a plus.
