Manager of Accounting - Boston, MA

The Opportunity.

Reporting to the Director of Accounting, the Manager of Accounting will manage a set of accounting activities to ensure the accurate processing of financial transactions in compliance with GAAP, corporate policies and external audits. The Manager of Accounting will be responsible for all facets of the monthly accounting close and financial reporting inclusive of supervising three full-time staff (Accounts Payable Administrator, Accounts Payable Coordinator and Payroll Accountant), and reconciliation of individual balance sheet & income statement accounts. The Manager of Accounting will work closely with the Director of Accounting and others in the organization in development and implementation of accounting policies, procedures and controls.

In This Role You Will:

Team Leadership

  • The Manager of Accounting will have management responsibility for three staff members: Accounts Payable Administrator, Accounts Payable Coordinator, and Payroll Staff Accountant

  • Supervise, mentor, and develop staff, including managing work allocation, training, problem resolution, performance evaluations, and the building of an effective team dynamic

  • Guide staff to consistently pursue technology solutions to streamline processes

  • Participate in ongoing development of accounting policies and procedures and management of internal controls

Ongoing and Month End Close

  • Reconciliation of GL schedules (fixed assets, prepaid, accrued expense)

  • Review (and produce) month end GL entries and oversee and assign account reconciliations of asset, liability, revenue and expense accounts

  • Manage payroll processing and administration (currently through Paycom); in partnership with Human Resources, ensure payroll data is accurate and identify continuous payroll process improvements and efficiencies

  • Review and approve bank account reconciliations to GL

  • Review and approve investment account and endowment reconciliations to GL

  • Produce and review monthly financial statements

  • Manage the payment and accounting of federal and multiple state taxes

Fiscal Year End Close & Audit

  • Work closely with the Director of Accounting, prepare and assist with developing audit schedules for annual audits

  • Assist in the preparation of the annual Form 990 federal tax returns and Form PC filings (for The Trustees and its affiliated entities)

  • Lead the accounting of audit-related activities for internal and external fiscal year-end

Accounts Payable

  • Maintain and enhance controls and workflow for purchasing and processing of vendor invoices via accounts payable module

  • Review and approve weekly invoice payment selection and check runs in accordance with cash disbursements policy and procedure

  • Review and ensure timely and accurate posting of AP invoices to correct GL periods, accounts, and sub- accounts

Payroll

  • Manage payroll processing and administration (currently through Paycom); in partnership with Human Resources, ensure payroll data is accurate and identify continuous payroll process improvements and efficiencies

  • Reconcile quarterly payroll reports filed with the IRS and MA Department of Revenue

  • Review and reconcile employee fringe benefits

  • Support the annual 401k audit

Qualifications:

Prior Experience:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in business/accounting/finance or equivalent experience required; CPA preferred

  • At least 2 years of staff management experience

  • Experience with non-profit accounting with at least five years of progressively responsibleaccounting and financial reporting experience within a complex organization

  • Thorough knowledge of GAAP and other industry standards and a familiarity of federal tax and other regulations preferred

  • Experience with audit and budget development

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Understanding of wage and hour laws as well as state and federal payroll taxes

  • Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality

  • Highly detail-oriented and organized

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook is required. Advanced Excel skills

  • Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge preferred


Compensation and Benefits:

The salary range for this position is $85,000-$95,000.
