Position Overview

We are seeking a full-time music teacher who is responsible for teaching 1st and 2nd beginning string orchestra classes and some general music instruction. Strong candidates will have a solid string pedagogy background, particularly for young players, and 3 or more years of experience teaching beginning violin, viola, cello, and bass in a group setting to young learners. The ability to teach multiple instruments, in addition to strings, is desirable and strong classroom management is essential. Collaboration with other classroom teachers and music staff is required in order to help fulfill the vision of a music integrated school and an in-school El Sistema inspired program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Utilize a variety of pedagogical approaches to effectively teach beginning strings (violin, viola, cello, and bass) and general music skills in a group setting.

  • Plan and implement curriculum in conjunction with respective grade level music teachers.

  • Help create and implement music integrated classroom projects in collaboration with curriculum developers and classroom teachers as needed.

  • Create and submit weekly lesson plans that support and follow El Sistema curricular frameworks.

  • Maintain the Lower School string instrument and supply inventory.

  • Facilitate a respectful environment for children and adults.

  • Ensure respectful and open lines of communication with parents bybeing available through written and oral communication, setting up conferences etc.

  • Attend all faculty meetings, weekly professional development sessions, and scheduled staff events.

  • Assist with school duties as needed (arrival, dismissal, lunch etc.).

  • Attend and assist with performances in and out of school as needed.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive teaching that is evident in lesson planning and instruction.


Qualifications:

Requirements:

  • Minimum 3 years experience teaching string music and implementing curriculum (urban setting preferable)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in music (education preferable)

  • Ability to work with basic Microsoft and Google programs (word, excel, Google drive etc.)

Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree in music (education preferable)

  • Massachusetts teaching licensure (preferable)

  • Ability to communicate in second language (Spanish, Haitian-Creole, Cape-Verdean Creole preferred)

  • Familiarity with online learning platforms
