Boston Ballet is positioning itself as the ballet company of the future. Our internationally-acclaimed performances, world-class education programs, and ground-breaking community initiatives have made us a leader in our field, with a 50-year history of promoting excellence and access to dance. The new Director of Development will join Boston Ballet’s Senior Leadership Team at a pivotal moment for our organization and our field, as we complete a strategic Campaign that will pivot us firmly from a brand of tradition to one of innovation.

In a typical season, Boston Ballet performs more than a hundred shows in the historic, 2,500-seat Boston Opera House. We mesmerize audiences with our sweeping repertoire, which spans from cherished 19th-century classics to world premiere commissions by historically underrepresented choreographic voices. Offstage, our studios, offices and school share a state-of-the-art headquarters in Boston’s South End.

Education is fundamental to Boston Ballet’s mission. Boston Ballet School, the largest ballet school in North America, serves thousands in Boston and the surrounding communities. Our Department of Education and Community Initiatives (ECI) maintains deep partnerships with our community, including Boston Public Schools. For nearly 30 years, our Citydance program has provided BPS third grade students with a tuition-free introduction to dance education.

A leader in artistry, the Ballet is simultaneously developing innovative approaches to arts management and organizational reinvention. Boston Ballet has responded to the COVID crisis with creativity and resilience. Our dancers have been safely back in the studios since September, helping define how our art form will be created and consumed in the future, and staying connected to our audiences and supporters through a virtual performance season. As we look ahead to the 2021/22 Season, we must craft a strategy that returns us to our core competencies, while continuing to invest in the new and valuable capabilities developed during the crisis.

ABOUT THE ROLE
As the head of the Development function at Boston Ballet, the Director of Development leads Boston Ballet’s efforts to meet contributed revenue targets, diversify and grow Boston Ballet’s Boards, and shape Boston Ballet’s reputation in Boston and beyond. As a pivotal member of the Senior Leadership Team and a leader of Institutional Advancement, the Director of Development will help guide the Ballet’s efforts to innovate and execute as it continues in its driving vision to be the ballet company of the future.

The ideal candidate for Director of Development will be an inspiring and strategic leader, a talented manager, and an ambitious, results-oriented fundraiser. They will have a track-record of successful partnership with Board leaders, and will excel at executive-level communication. They will have a bias towards data-driven and insight-driven leadership, with a proven ability to craft high-impact, high-ROE strategies. They will be a sophisticated ambassador for Boston Ballet at our performances, events, and in our community.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contributed Revenue achievement
    • Owns a contributed revenue target of $12-15M annually via fundraising for the annual fund, endowment, and special projects
    • Leads team to meet these targets via fundraising strategies aligned with Boston Ballet’s artistic vision; including Major Gifts, Individual Giving, Special Events, Corporate Partnerships, Government & Foundation Support, and Campaign & Multi-Year Giving
    • Creatively designs donor benefits and stewardship to deepen engagement
    • Maintains personal portfolio of ~50 high-level donors and prospects

  • Campaign Strategy
    • In partnership with the Executive Director, Artistic Director, and Campaign Cabinet, shapes strategy for the final phase of Boston Ballet’s $100M Comprehensive Campaign
    • Orchestrates the Campaign’s public launch
    • Institutionalizes the Campaign’s operating achievements, including the success of multi-year giving
  • Board Partnership and Growth
    • Leads the Board Development Committee, and partners with the Trusteeship Committee and relevant ad hoc Committees, to design and fulfill strategies to advance Boston Ballet
    • In partnership with Executive Director and Board, recruits and engages diverse, talented individuals for Boston Ballet’s Board of Trustees and Board of Advisors
    • Designs best-in-class strategies to grow the Board of Trustees from 35 to 40 individuals
  • Department Leadership
    • Provides clear leadership for staff of 10-12, leverages the talent of each staff member, and motivates the department, consistent with Boston Ballet’s Vision and Core Values
    • Cultivates strong collaboration with artistic colleagues throughout department
    • Guides department budget, forecasting, and reporting
  • Innovative leadership during COVID-19
    • Partners with Executive Director to craft an agile, innovative response to the pandemic’s unprecedented challenges for the performing arts
    • Develops projects and partnerships that will shape the way our art form is created and consumed in the future
    • As a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, helps redefine ways of working together and with our community to make Boston Ballet more diverse, equitable and inclusive
    • Believes the COVID crisis creates an opportunity for Boston Ballet to increase our audiences, adaptiveness, and competitive advantages for future seasons
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience as well as 10+ years of experience in fundraising at high-performing non-profit organizations
  • A track record of managing contributed revenue programs and departments that successfully raise more than $5,000,000; Campaign experience valued but not required
  • Success in personally soliciting and closing six and seven-figure philanthropic contributions
  • Ability to lead in a complex environment, and to earn the trust of colleagues and leadership of all levels; ability to collaborate, persuade and be persuaded
  • Demonstrated initiative, autonomy, and strategic thinking
  • Outcome-driven leadership, with a sophisticated understanding of technology and systems, and a strong record of using data and metrics to drive fundraising growth
  • Exceptional executive-level communication skills
  • Passion for the arts and Boston Ballet’s mission
