Awesomenauts (Volunteers for Community Makerspace)

Awesomenaut session will run from 04/06 - 06/15

Artisan’s Asylum is a 40,000 square foot community maker space located in Somerville, MA. This inspiring space features workshop, design and fabrication facilities in woodworking, metalworking, precision machining, electronics, robotics, screen printing, 3D printing, laser cutting, jewelry, fabric arts and more. In any given month, Artisan’s Asylum serves up to 500 members and 200 students in our shop areas.

The Awesomenaut Program at Artisan’s Asylum is a 10-week volunteer session that offers an exciting opportunity to support the day to day operations of the maker space in exchange for access to the fabrication facilities and training expertise of Artisan’s Asylum. Immersed in a collaborative and creative space, you will work closely with a small management team and a group of dedicated member-volunteers in a fast-paced, challenging and rewarding work environment

You will work under the direction of the Facilities Manager in the maintenance and upkeep of our shared community spaces and shop areas. The work involved will range from general maintenance, cleaning and organizational tasks to building and painting walls, maintaining tools and/or shop areas, helping set up and assist during public events or other special projects.

This volunteer position requires an 8 hour per week commitment. You are free to set up a work schedule that works for you, but we do ask that you maintain a regular schedule to better plan activities.

During the 10 week session, Awesomenauts will be given full access to Artisan’s Asylum, including the opportunity to learn and apply design and fabrication techniques in our community maintained shops and facilities. Training in project-specific areas will be provided as necessary, and learning in areas of special interest will be accommodated wherever possible.

Prior fabrication and design experience (basic carpentry, painting, welding, electronics, metalworking or CAD design) is a plus, but not required. Training will be provided as needed for specific projects.

Participants must:

  1. Be over the age of 18. Adult volunteers of any age are welcome to apply.
  2. Commit to volunteer at least 8 hours per week on a regular schedule.
  3. Follow basic safety protocols when working around power tools and equipment
  4. Be respectful of the creative process and the work of others
  5. Provide feedback at the end of the session to help us continue to evolve and improve the Awesomenaut program for future cohorts

Some of the potential benefits of participating in this Volunteer Program at Artisan’s Asylum are:
  1. Learning new skills
  2. Supporting an amazing non-profit community organization, dedicated to learning and creativity
  3. Meeting interesting and talented people, including other volunteers participating in this program
