Museum Development Director
The Somerville Museum seeks an enterprising and imaginative fundraising leader to serve as the Museum’s Chief Development Officer. The successful candidate will be a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, reporting to the President of the Board of Trustees and the Executive Director. The position will be half- time for a period of one year with the possibility of renewal. The Development Director will work with Somerville Museum stakeholders including the Board of Trustees, the Council of Advisors, the Executive Director, Assistant Director and volunteers to achieve strategic and campaign funding goals.
The Museum is currently in the last phase of the 2010-2020 strategic plan. This has included the successful undertaking of many important capital projects, including the replacement of the Museum’s slate roof and weatherization of the Museum interior for the eventual introduction of climate control. At this time, the Museum has raised or has pledges of $900,000 toward a $1.6m project to construct an addition that that houses an elevator and makes other interior improvements.
The successful candidate for this opportunity will have a background in development within museums, arts, or other non-profit organizations; S/he will have a demonstrated ability to multitask and will systematically identify and build relationships with new sources of support, including the development of corporate constituencies and charitable foundations. S/he will broaden and grow the Museum’s membership as well as broaden the Museum’s appeal to diverse groups in the community. The ideal applicant will be able to demonstrate a record of closing principal and planned gifts.
