Graphic Designer (Part-Time)


Leading publisher of educational materials in the areas of Asian languages and cultural studies for the K-12 and higher education markets seeks a Graphic Designer to join its growing team. The ideal candidate is someone who is passionate about bringing a book and supporting materials to life, from manuscript to published product in both print and digital formats. Must understand the difference between designing print and digital projects. Must have experience using the tools of the print and digital production trade (Adobe Creative Suite and HTML/CSS) and be able to manage materials and schedules with exceptional organizational skills.


· Work with the Creative Director to transform concepts into visual executions that articulate the Cheng & Tsui brand and deliver on business needs.

· Develop clean and modern design aesthetic with exceptional sense for typography

· Help manage graphic and multimedia design for both print and digital products, including coordinating with editorial, marketing, website, and technology teams, freelancers, and other vendors as needed.

· Assist in executing design and production workflows for new and reprint projects.

· Manage multimedia assets (including images, audio, video, and other multimedia assets) and design documents.

· Support in the preparation of detailed RFQs for typesetters, designers, illustrators, audio-video artists as needed; evaluate and negotiate rates for work.

· Traffic, review, and proof design and typesetting drafts to ensure all design work meets company’s quality guidelines, branding standards.

· Participate in designing websites of all types—ecommerce, companion, distance learning, classroom, community, etc.—for attractive visuals, animation, interactive media, and ease-of-use interfaces together with web and editorial development teams.

· Work with marketing team on all marketing collaterals’ design needs, whether in print or on the web.

· Collaborate with internal teams to ensure transparent communication, cross-training, resource balancing, and finding solutions to problems.

· Must be flexible with his/her schedule to help wherever the need arises even if the tasks are outside the primary areas of responsibilities.


· B.F.A. or B.A. degree or equivalent experience

· Minimum 6 years’ relevant experience in design and book production, preferably in educational publishing, both print and digital.

· Ability to handle deadline pressures and to manage successfully multiple projects at once.

· Desire to work in a small, entrepreneurial environment where you will have varied opportunities and responsibilities and are expected to pitch in hands-on wherever needed.

· Highly organized and thorough, with exceptional written and oral communication skills, problem solving skills, and attention to detail.

· Demonstrated expertise with latest versions of Adobe Creative Cloud Suite (specifically InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat).

· Experience with typesetting (PDF workflow) and pre-press processes.

· Self-starter who appreciates working collaboratively in a small, dynamic team environment, with a strong work ethic of continuous learning.

· Interest in Asian languages and cultures a plus.
