Salisbury Cultural District Manager



The Salisbury Cultural District (SCD), adjacent to the northern tip of Main Street in the City of Worcester, is one of Massachusetts’ 45 state-designated Cultural Districts. Established in 2015, the SCD is a public-private partnership initiative focused on increasing visitation and tourism, nurturing local cultural development, advocating for “universal accessibility,” and encouraging the preservation and re-use of historic buildings in the District. Its mission is to “foster the economic growth of and increase public engagement in the District through the collaborative promotion of its cultural assets, and thereby enhance the creative an economic vitality of the City of Worcester.” A sampling of the creative and natural assets located in the District includes the American Antiquarian Society, Institute Park and Salisbury Pond, WPI, Worcester Art Museum, churches, Worcester Historical Museum, and a vibrant stretch of restaurants, shops, and retail services along Highland Street. The Salisbury Cultural District Executive Committee seeks a highly creative, motivated, and entrepreneurial professional consultant to assist the Committee and District Stakeholders in advancing the goals and objectives of the District. This 10 hour/week contract position will be for a term of one year and is renewable based on available funding. This position reports to the Salisbury Cultural District Executive Committee.

Working in partnership with the SCD Committee and Stakeholders, the Cultural District Manager will help fulfill the stated FY19 priorities to:

  • Enhance SCD visibility, marketing, and cross-promotion efforts

  • Coordinate SCD Executive Committee meetings, subcommittee group meetings, and SCD stakeholder meetings

  • Identify and secure potential annual funding stream/s for SCD operations and activities (perhaps through key fundraising event)

  • Beautify streetscape – highly visible points of interest have been identified in which to give focus to strengthen the District’s visual identity and improve its aesthetics

  • Install Mass Cultural Council-approved Cultural District signage

  • Help build and strengthen mutually-beneficial relationships and network of SCD stakeholders (from both within and outside the Cultural District boundaries)



  • Exceptional organizational, communication, and relationship-building skills

  • The ability to take initiative and work independently as well as part of a team

  • Demonstrated success in grantwriting/fundraising, program development and implementation, marketing/public relations, and special events

  • Available to work some evenings and weekends as necessary


  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

  • 3-5 years of experience in related fields (community development, economic development, special events, marketing, fundraising)

  • Knowledge of – and an interest in – the arts and the humanities, and familiarity with the City of Worcester and surrounding region

  • Effective group facilitation skills and ability to keep multiple stakeholders of diverse backgrounds and personalities engaged

The Salisbury Cultural District (SCD) is the first and only state-designated cultural district in the City of Worcester. The District represents a public-private partnership between the City of Worcester and the Worcester Cultural Coalition and comprises a strong concentration of cultural, natural, educational, and creative business assets located just beyond the northern section of Main Street.
