Art Enrichment Instructor


Steps to Success (STS), a comprehensive school success and college readiness program, is hiring multiple Enrichment Instructors for its after-school Extended Learning Programs (ELP). Enrichment Instructors come in once per week for a 10-12 week session to run activities for one hour.

ELP programs serve about 15-20 students each, in grades 4-6. The programs run at three Brookline Elementary/Middle Schools: Pierce, Lincoln, and Coolidge Corner (formerly Devotion) Schools. They run three days per week (Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays, depending on the school/program). Enrichment Instructors would need to be available on at least one of the above days from 4pm-5pm.

Enrichment Instructors are part-time, temporary positions, (1-3 hours per week, for 10-12 weeks, with the option to stay on for additional sessions). Candidates will need to be available for employment starting the week of 1/7/2019 through the week of 3/25/2019, with potential option to stay on until mid-June 2019 if desired.

Program Objectives

As a result of having a wider breadth of experience in regards to enrichment activities…

  • Students will develop improved engagement in learning

  • Students will develop skill sets beyond those learned during the school day.

  • Students will develop better communication skills and relations with their peers

As a result of having more access to structured and targeted HW support…

  • Students will have increased completion of homework

  • Students will turn in higher quality homework

Enrichment Instructor Duties

  • Design and teach units that are fun, interactive, and provide opportunities for Social-emotional growth (without feeling like school!).

    • Enrichment units can be, and have been, widely varied- Instructors can be very creative with the topics and themes they choose. Examples of recent enrichment units have included: improv, movie making, photography, SLAM poetry, fine arts, web design, robotics and coding, graphic design, and many more...

  • Work as a team with Program Director, Assistant Director, and volunteers

  • Develop positive relationships with and among students, establish a clear sense of structure, and a fun, respectful learning atmosphere.



  • At least 1 years experience planning and running activities designed to engage young people in a school, camp, after school, or residential setting, OR degree/work experience in enrichment subject matter area.

  • Demonstrated commitment to youth development. Ability to work with a diverse population and with students of varying levels of academic skill and engagement

  • Flexibility and creativity in relating to students in an after-school setting is essential. Experience with students in middle school age range is important.

Additional Information

  • $50/hour, with the option to teach on multiple days, at multiple sites (1-4 hours/week)

  • This is an independent contractor position

  • Supervised by ELP Program Directors and STS Director of Programs

STS is a partnership between the Public Schools of Brookline, and the Brookline Housing Authority. STS offers supports and programming for kids in Brookline who live in public housing from grade 4 through college.
