Assistant Professor - Studio Foundation (2 positions) Tenure Track


Massachusetts College of Art and Design Studio Foundation Department is seeking faculty for two tenure-track positions starting at the level of Assistant Professor. We are seeking two faculty members who can teach across our Studio Foundation curriculum.

We seek applications from integrated artists and designers committed to an awareness of current visual culture, with vision, and a strong commitment to their studio and teaching practice. One applicant must have the minimum requirements of an active design practice. The second applicant can have the minimum requirements of an active art or design practice.

The Studio Foundation Department is committed to a multi-disciplinary approach in preparing students to enter the art and design majors. For both positions, we seek candidates who have the interest and ability to teach a minimum of two different studies across the Studio Foundation including: Drawing, 2D studies, 3D studies, and 4D studies.

We are seeking individuals with an active practice, commitment and demonstration of the following, including, but not limited to: inclusion and equity, environmental sustainability, global issues, visual theory and culture, studio related research, design thinking, and a strong commitment to their studio and teaching practice. In addition to teaching and advising first year students, the candidate must be dedicated to departmental curricular development.

Required Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to practice broad curriculum development, work effectively with and benefit a diverse student body.

• A terminal degree or equivalent professional experience in chosen field.

• A minimum of three years college-level teaching experience excluding graduate teaching assistantships.

• Demonstrated ability to teach a range of courses, including at least two from among the following Studio Foundation Studies: Drawing, 2D studies, 3D studies, and 4D studies.

• An active participation in applicant’s field.

• A broad range of student work.

Other Considerations:

• The Studio Foundation Department is especially interested in candidates with the demonstrated ability to integrate topics including but not limited to social justice, sustainability, health, and the environment in curriculum to prepare students to be citizen artists and designers addressing the global challenges we face today.

• A fluency in traditional and digital practices and media.

• A consistent professional record of creative practice including but not limited to exhibitions, publications, community-based work, design projects.
