Preservation Specialist/Operations Manager


Location: Lyman Estate, Waltham, Massachusetts

Historic New England is looking for a dynamic mid-career preservation professional who desires to be a part of a non-profit that has long been a leader in establishing preservation philosophy, standards and methods. Join the team, be a steward of the philosophy as it is applied to the preservation and maintenance of the historic house museums, and help develop new standards for the care of our properties. The preservation specialist/operations manager is a new management position with a goal of supporting smooth, efficient, and cost effective management of all team functions. You will play a key role in the preservation of the historic site collection through the implementation of several key program areas: management of the preservation carpentry crew including project development; administration of the security program; and oversight of overall bidding and contract negotiation. You will also be a liaison with fundraising and grant development, support maintenance activities at three sites, and coordinate work on vacant tenant apartments to ensure improvements are within the preservation standards set by the team.


If you have the equivalent of a master’s degree in historic preservation and at least six years of job-related experience then you have the background we are looking for. If you have high level administrative skills, attention to detail,problem solving skills, and can operate efficiently by yourself and as part of a team then you have the skills to be successful. If you have email, word processing, and basic spreadsheet capabilities and feel comfortable with computers then you can master the technology required for this position. The position does require a valid driver’s license and means of transportation as well as periodic response to alarm call and emergencies.


As typically performed, this position regularly involves talking, hearing, sitting, standing, walking and bending/stooping. This position also involves lifting up to 30 pounds. The employee must perform functions that include constant keyboarding and basic electronic and paper database and file management, each of which typically requires manual dexterity in combination with eye-hand coordination. The employee must be able to communicate clearly. The position also requires constantly reading documents for general understanding.
