Production Positions Shakespeare on the Common: Summer 2019

Description:

CSC’s 2019 Shakespeare on the Common title is Cymbeline, directed by Fred Sullivan Jr. This is CSC’s 24th season producing FREE, professional productions of Shakespeare on the Boston Common, and we would love for you to be a part of it!

July 8 – 12: Load-In
July 12 – July 23: Tech Rehearsals/Previews
July 24 – August 4: Performances
August 5 – 7: Load-Out

(Most contracts run from July 8th – August 7th unless otherwise noted and are subject to change)

PRODUCTION STAFF

SCENIC/PROPS/BACKSTAGE POSITIONS

Props Artisan (June 18-August 7): Work with the Scenic Designer, Director, & Production Manager on
the build, purchase and/or borrowing of props for the production. Must have own car (mileage reimbursed)
and access to shop space.

Stage Supervisor (July 3 – August 7): Work with Production Management to ensure smooth load-in and
load-out process, act as onsite technical director and crew supervisor for performances, act as onsite point
person during performances.

LIGHTING

Assistant Lighting Designer (June 18 – July 24; stipend provided): Assistant to Lighting Designer.
Attend production meetings. Be present to assist during light hang and focus, tech rehearsals, and previews.
Master Electrician (July 1 – August 7): Work with Lighting Designer & Production Manager to create
and prep shop order, supervise lighting load-in, hang, and focus, set up power for compound and vendors, etc.

Assistant Master Electrician/Programmer (July 3 – August 7): Assist the Master Electrician during
prep and load-in and be responsible for programming and running of the light board during rehearsals and
performances.

SOUND

Audio 2: Assist the Chief Audio Engineer and be primarily responsible for management and maintenance of
wireless microphones including fitting to actors and backstage tracking

COSTUMES/WARDROBE

Assistant Costume Designer (June 18 – July 24; stipend provided): Assistant to Costume Designer.
Attend production meetings and check-in on construction at costume shop. Be present to assist during tech
rehearsals and previews.

Costume Shop Supervisor (June 10-August 7) Work with the Costume Designer & Production Manager
on the build, purchase and/or borrowing of costumes for the production.

Wardrobe Supervisor (July 3 – August 7): Lead the Wardrobe area, providing costume support for
performers. Direct and oversee costume maintenance, laundry and serve as a dresser during rehearsals and
performances. Coordinate with Costume Designer and Costume Shop during load-in and load-out.

Assistant Wardrobe Supervisor: Assist the Wardrobe Supervisor with costume maintenance, laundry and
serve as a dresser during rehearsals and performances; work as part of the wardrobe crew during load-in and load-out

INTERNSHIPS

Commonwealth Shakespeare Company is committed to the education and training of the next generation of
theatre artists. Interns work alongside the professional production staff and interact with the various artists
that comprise the free Shakespeare on the Common team. Interns gain practical training and experience in
their area of focus, industry contacts, and an opportunity to explore professional theatre production. Typical
internship candidates are current students or recent graduates of college theatre programs. Interns receive a weekly stipend of $150; no housing, travel, or transportation is provided. CSC will work with interns and their educational institution to provide credit upon request.

Stage Management Intern (June 18-August 4): Work as part of the AEA Stage Management team in
rehearsals, tech, and performance with recording blocking, tracking props and costumes, running backstage, etc. Rehearsals (June 18-July 11) take place at Babson College; access to a car or a strong transportation plan is encouraged.

Technical Theatre Intern, 3 positions: Work as a member of the support crew for load-in and load-out
and serve as run crew for performances.

Electrics Intern, 2 positions: Work as part of the electrics crew during load-in, work calls and load-out;
run follow spots for rehearsals and performances. Must be comfortable working at heights up to 35’ in fall
arrest harness.

Sound Intern: Work as part of the sound crew during load-in, work calls and load-out; run playback for
rehearsals and performances. Must be comfortable working at heights in lifts and on ladders.

Wardrobe Intern, 2 positions: Work as part of the costume/wardrobe crew during load-in, work calls, and
load-out, serve as dresser during rehearsals and performances

HIRING TIMELINE

*Review of applicants will begin around March 15, 2019 and preliminary interviews shortly thereafter.

*Offers will be ongoing throughout the interviewing process.
* The goal date for hiring to be complete is April 30, 2019.

Commonwealth Shakespeare Company (CSC), best known for its annual free performances on the Boston Common, is a non-profit organization founded in 1996, dedicated to the core values of artistic excellence, accessibility, and education. CSC’s Free Shakespeare on the Common has served over one million audience members over its 23-year history, and has become a beloved summer tradition enjoyed by nearly 75,000 people annually.
