Tanglewood Learning Institute Program Manager


The Boston Symphony’s Tanglewood Learning Institute (TLI) provides participants with opportunities for greater understanding and exploration of classical music, and a wide range of connected intellectual pursuits. The TLI Program Manager envisions, contributes to, and produces a wide array of in person and online learning and engagement programs for adults.


· Support design, planning, and delivery of a variety of in-person learning and engagement programs and activities, working closely with staff from across the BSO, our partners, affiliates, and guests

· Deliver engaging public presentations on a variety of topics; lead and/or participate in panel discussions and Q&A sessions with a diverse range of artists and TLI guests

· Assist with recruitment and engagement of artists and TLI experts, negotiate contracts as requested

· Assist artists and TLI experts with assembly of materials or content to ensure meaningful experiences for participants, artists, scholars, and guests

· Coordinate technical requirements and requests from TLI artists, scholars, presenters and other subject matter experts

· Assist with travel, accommodation, and hospitality for invited guests

· Support the development and deployment of TLI Online programs

· Collaborate with marketing and customer service personnel to ensure effective communication of TLI information and programming; assist with customer inquiries related to programming, content, and TLI-related matters

· Provide administrative support for operational planning, scheduling, interdepartmental collaboration, and program evaluation

· Act as manager on duty for TLI activities at Tanglewood, in Boston, and elsewhere, on a rotation basis

· Perform other duties as assigned


Degree/diploma in music, education, or arts administration or equivalent experience. Deep understanding and love of music, broad cultural knowledge and awareness, and the ability to facilitate connections among artists, scholars, presenters, and participants. Minimum of five years’ experience in program development, arts administration, adult learning, or other related disciplines. Comfort with public speaking for diverse audiences. Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, including diplomacy, discretion, and tact. Demonstrated project management and event management skills. Familiar with integration of multimedia and other relevant technology in public programs; computer experience and the ability to learn new software required. Able to work both independently and in a collaborative environment. Able to work effectively under pressure and on various projects simultaneously. Available to work flexible hours and to relocate to Tanglewood during the summer months. Degree/diploma in music, education, or arts administration or equivalent experience

About this Organization:
The Boston Symphony Orchestra, Inc., was founded in 1881 and is comprised of major sub-organizations including Boston Symphony Orchestra, Tanglewood Music Center, Days in the Arts, Tanglewood Festival Chorus, the Boston Pops, Esplanade Pops, and the Chamber Players.

The Boston Symphony Orchestra performs in historic Symphony Hall from October through May under the direction of Maestro Andris Nelsons. The Boston Pops Orchestra, under conductor Keith Lockhart, performs in Symphony Hall during May and June in addition to, annual series Holiday Pops concerts in December. In July and August the orchestra performs at Tanglewood, its summer home in the magnificent Berkshires of western Massachusetts. The administrative offices of the BSO employ approximately 175 people.
