The Boston Symphony Orchestra has had a long tradition and commitment of bringing an array of musical experiences to the community and the world. The key to our success has been our employees from the musicians onstage to those behind the scenes.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Publicist to assist with the strategy, planning and execution of all aspects of publicity. In this key role, you will expand press outreach to media sectors beyond arts and music, including college, education, and travel, among others. Additionally, you willwrite press materials, assist with photography and video and develop key relationships with local and national media. Bring your professionalism, initiative and multi-tasking skills to a premier non-profit arts organization.


· Develop and maintain relationships with members of the newspaper, radio, television and web media to leverage for coverage of the orchestra's activities.

· Meet with Press Office colleagues weekly to develop story ideas to pitch to journalists at local and national media outlets, as well as track stories already in place.

· Develop and implement short and long-term strategies for expanded coverage of activities in the online press sector and in non-arts/cultural media sectors including college, education (more broadly) and social and lifestyle, among others.

· As part of a Press Office team approach under the direction of the Assistant Director of Public Relations, develop key relationships with travel press and colleagues at visitor bureaus in Boston, the Berkshires and tour cities to procure coverage of the orchestra's activities in this industry sector.

· Develop and expand the network of contacts for major online media sites and pitch stories related to the orchestra’s many activities.

· Work closely with public relations and marketing colleagues to generate new ideas for social media, blog posts and online sites; create and edit weekly video posts for social media platforms. Work with artist publicists and managers, request/encourage artists to highlight their BSO activities on their social media sites.

· Work with public relations team to publicize Pops tour concerts: generate story ideas, place stories in print, radio and television media, arrange interviews and service all press requests.

· Under the supervision of Assistant Director of Public Relations, act as press representative for Boston Pops run-out concerts; generate and oversee all press coverage for each concert, including scheduling interviews with musicians and Boston Pops Conductor Keith Lockhart.

· Manage office budget and process invoices, track office spending and reconcile press office records with monthly financial reports.

· Write and format press materials with emphasis on press releases, press calls, press kits and pitch letters, as well as update artist bios and fact sheets and orchestra histories.As assigned, set up and distribute press releases through Mail2, using Dreamweaver to create HTML emails.

· Manage office’s press ticket system, oversee ticket requests for BSO, Pops and Tanglewood events; oversee and coordinate Tanglewood parking and season pass system for all visiting press.

· Manage supervision of television news crews when needed during all BSO-related events.


BS/BA degree with concentration in journalism, English, or public relations preferred; music background preferred. Three to five years prior work experience in a public relations setting required. Excellent writing/typing skills and word-processing and social media proficiency required.Flexibility to work overtime on nights and weekends when needed. Basic photography/video skills important.

This position requires relocation to Tanglewood , Lenox, MA  from late June through Labor Day. Weekend work required during Tanglewood season.

About this Organization:
The Boston Symphony Orchestra, Inc., was founded in 1881 and is comprised of major sub-organizations including Boston Symphony Orchestra, Tanglewood Music Center, Days in the Arts, Tanglewood Festival Chorus, the Boston Pops, Esplanade Pops, and the Chamber Players.

The Boston Symphony Orchestra performs in historic Symphony Hall from October through May under the direction of Maestro Andris Nelsons. The Boston Pops Orchestra, under conductor Keith Lockhart, performs in Symphony Hall during May and June in addition to, annual series Holiday Pops concerts in December. In July and August the orchestra performs at Tanglewood, its summer home in the magnificent Berkshires of western Massachusetts. The administrative offices of the BSO employ approximately 175 people.
