Spring 2019 Internships at Boston Center for the Arts
Located in the historic South End, Boston Center for the Arts
(BCA) is a nexus of the Boston arts community committed to incubating and
showcasing the performing and visual arts of our time. Internships at BCA allow
you the opportunity to gain insight into the wide spectrum of business
operations of an arts organization, work with different departments on a
variety of projects, develop skills essential for your future employment and
connect with local artists and arts professionals.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Interns at BCA
generally work between 8 and 20 hours per week between Monday and Friday and
during regular business hours (9 am - 5 pm). There may be times when Interns
are asked to work evening or weekends for special events, though these are rare
and will be discussed with the Intern well in advance of the event. During the
internship, the intern focuses on a specific area (General Administration,
Fundraising & Event Planning, Marketing, Programs - Visual Arts, Programs -
Performing Arts, Gallery Maintenance & Management) while having the
opportunity to experience various departments and projects. The duties of the
position include, but are not limited to:
- Promptly accomplish projects assigned
by BCA staff, communicate challenges and questions, and report progress
- Work both individually and
collaboratively in conjunction with all BCA departments;
- Assist with special events as required;
- Attend meetings as required;
- Act as a BCA ambassador and resource to
- Report to work for occasional evening, weekend and/or early
morning commitments as required.
- Fundraising & Event Planning
school or above. College or higher preferred.
Internships are for students earning academic credits only. Please consult with
your program or university Career Development Office for credit eligibility
The successful candidate will have: a genuine interest in the arts and arts
administration; an eagerness to learn; a strong sense of responsibility; a high
level of maturity and professionalism; good time management as well as
organization skills; attention to detail; excellent communication skills; and
be comfortable working individually and collaboratively. Familiarity with
PatronManager (database) preferred. For the Gallery Management &
Maintenance position, studio art and sculpture students preferred.

Boston Center for the Arts is an historic nonprofit performing and visual arts complex that supports working artists to create, perform and exhibit new work; builds new audiences and connects art to community.
BCA is located in Boston's South End, the largest landmark district in the United States. BCA is a four acre complex that includes: The Cyclorama, built in 1884 to display a panorama painting, is on the National Register of Historic Places. The 23,000 square foot Cyclorama rotunda is now the site of exhibitions, performances and community events and houses the Community Music Center of Boston, the Art Connection, the Boston Ballet Costume Shop, three small theaters and a rehearsal studio.
