Vice President of Experience

Description:

The EcoTarium, a museum of nature and science, seeks a senior level leader to fill the newly created position of Vice President of Experience. The EcoTarium’s Vice President of Experience reports to the President & CEO and supports and collaborates with the board, senior leadership, staff, and the community to carry out the EcoTarium’s mission and vision through all experiential, mission-based offerings and guest services. The successful candidate will be a hands-on, participative manager and will lead and develop internal teams, as well as external partners, to support the Museum to fully implement the 2016-2020 strategic plan, and in preparation for the 200th anniversary in 2025. The VP of Experience will ensure the organization has operating excellence, integrity, and creativity in the following areas:


- Education

- Exhibits

- Collections

- Living Collections

- Guest Services


Responsibilities:

Education Department

· Oversee the development of education programs consistent with the mission of the EcoTarium and the coordination of special events; build and facilitate collaborative partnerships with external stakeholders with a focus on mission delivery in programmatic areas.

· Oversee the delivery of an exceptional educational experience in programs and within exhibits

· Identify best practices and improve internal systems with an eye toward future needs and budget realities

· Work with manager to develop departmental budget for all educational programming

· Work with Volunteer and Community Engagement Coordinator within education department and across division to ensure community partners are fully engaged through collaborative partnerships, MOUs and shared mission programming

· Work with Institutional Advancement on review and reporting of grant and sponsorship projects related to divisions, as well as fundraising events

· Represent the EcoTarium at public meetings, professional conferences, partnerships and programs; serve as leader for strategic partnerships with formal education systems in the region

· Serve in an ex officio capacity on Education and Programs committee of the Board of Trustees


Exhibits Department

· Provide oversight and direction for museum exhibits, permanent and traveling including exhibit maintenance; build and facilitate collaborative partnerships with external stakeholders with a focus on both co-created content and career development programs

· Work with President, Board and staff in strategic planning and master planning for exhibits and overall site; providing leadership for exhibits and collections

· Identify best practices and improve internal systems with an eye toward future needs and budget realities

· Work with manager to develop departmental budget for all exhibits

· Work with Institutional Advancement on review and reporting of grant and sponsorship projects related to divisions, as well as fundraising events

· Represent the EcoTarium at public meetings, professional conferences, partnerships and programs; serve as leader for strategic partnerships for future exhibit development

· Oversee collections, building staffing and working toward establishing physical and intellectual control over collections

· Serve in ex officio capacity on Collections Committee of the Board

· Represent the museum at public events, professional meetings and collaborative grant projects

Living Collections Department

· Provide oversight and direction for all living collections management and exhibition; build and facilitate strategic relationships with external stakeholders to build career development programs within the living collections department

· Identify best practices and improve internal systems with an eye toward future needs and budget realities

· Work with manager to develop departmental budget for all living collections

· Identify and work with managers to implement conservation based strategies within the living collections department and cross-functionally with education programming and exhibits.

· Work with Institutional Advancement on review and reporting of grant and sponsorship projects related to divisions, as well as fundraising events

· Oversee institutional plans to secure AZA accreditation (with a lens to future AAM accreditation)

· Ensure best practices in animal care, enrichment, training, and welfare in compliance with state and federal standards, and industry best practices

· Work with department management on institutional collections plan in line with EcoTarium’s 2016-2020 strategic plan.

Guest Services Department

· Provide oversight and direction for guest services department; work with external stakeholders to identify and develop best practices for guest engagement and accessibility

· Identify best practices and improve internal systems with an eye toward future needs and budget realities

· Work with manager to develop departmental budget for all guest services

· Work with Institutional Advancement on review and reporting of grant and sponsorship projects related to divisions, as well as fundraising events, marketing and membership programs

· Serve as data collection manager for COVES

· Identify and implement strategies to improve guest experience

Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s degree with senior level management experience in a zoo, museum, or nature center at a senior leadership level required

· Highly skilled at internal and external customer service with demonstrated results in effecting positive change for customers

· Experience developing budgets and growing earned revenue opportunities

· Leader in encouraging and driving creativity, innovation and collaboration with a vision for 21st century museum exhibits, including co-created content

· Leader in informal science educational philosophy with experience developing programming with management team

· Experience in relating to the community, responding to community needs and interacting with community leaders

· Proven achievement of operational results without compromise to the organization’s mission and values

· Proven experience in leading and building teams, and fostering a positive and collaborative working environment

· Highly organized, experience scheduling complex project management and logistics, and keeping multiple simultaneous projects on schedule and within budget

· Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, organizational and leadership skills

· Experience with data-based decision making and change management strategies at a senior leadership level

· Experience working with living collections at an AZA accredited organization preferred

· Pass CORI background check in accordance with EcoTarium’s guidelines
