Executive Director of the Worcester Center for Crafts

Description:

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors of the Worcester Center for Crafts and to the Associate Vice President for Continuing Education and Dean of Graduate Studies of Worcester State University and is responsible for the consistent achievement of the mission and objectives of the Worcester Center for Crafts.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Full-time and part-time Worcester Center for Crafts staff


General Statement of Duties:

1. Provide the vision and skills to develop and articulate the programs that fulfill the mission of the Worcester Center for Crafts.

2. Provide leadership for the faculty, staff and students who realize that mission.

3. Advocate for the Craft Center to the higher education administration and numerous public and private entities.

4. Develop and implement fundraising efforts to support the Center's programs.

5. Oversee and assess the development of classes and workshops, the gallery and gallery store, and the overall marketing of programs at the Craft Center.

6. Oversee planning, budgeting, assessment, and reporting for all Craft Center programs.

7. Support the operation of Worcester State University's academic programs.

8. Coordinate collaborative academic programs with appropriate academic representatives from HECCMA (Higher Education Consortium of Central Massachusetts).

The Executive Director serves as the Chief operating officer of the Worcester Center for Crafts.


Strategy and Planning

In partnership with the board and staff:

  • (E) Develops an implementation plan for the annual operation of the Center.
  • (E) Assures that the Center has a long-range strategic plan that furthers its mission.
  • (E) Develops a strategy and implementation plan to increase community youth and adult program attendance.
  • (E) Develops a strategy and implementation plan for continuing education programs in conjunction with the Worcester State University’s Division of Graduate and Continuing Education.
  • (E) Develops a strategy and implementation plan for facility maintenance and upgrades.

Development

With support from the Office of University Advancement at Worcester State University:

  • (E) Develops a comprehensive annual fundraising plan.
  • (E) Meets with donors; corporate, private business, individual, and foundation.
  • (E) When appropriate, develops the Center’s Capital Campaign and works closely with board members and the Office of University Advancement to clarify financial targets and a plan for reaching them.
  • (E) Develops a planned giving program.

Marketing

In partnership with the Marketing Department at Worcester State University:

  • (E) Develops marketing strategies to promote the Center’s community-based education programs, gallery shows, and activities.
  • (E) Develops marketing strategies to promote continuing education programs in conjunction with Worcester State University’s Division of Graduate and Continuing Education.
  • Outreach and Advocacy
  • (E) Represents the Worcester Center for Crafts in the regional non-profit arts community, the neighborhood, and the greater community in general.
  • (E) Advocates for the Worcester Center for Crafts in the University Community.

Programming

  • (E) Plans and implements a schedule of adult classes and workshops.
  • (E) Plans and implements a schedule of youth classes and workshops.
  • (E) Defines expectations for current programs and develops a meaningful set of metrics and goals for all classes, programs, and events.

Fiscal Management

  • (E) Analyzes financial information, makes fiscally sound decisions, and ensures that the Center operates within budget guidelines.
  • (E) Provides the Board with accurate, concise financial information and presents operations and recommendations to support sound financial decision making.
  • (E) Works with staff and the Board to create the annual budget.

Board Relationships

  • (E) Provides support to the Board of Directors, coordinates board meetings, provides support for committee meetings, and provides necessary communications for effective interface between Board and Center activities.
  • (E) Recommends ways to improve board effectiveness within the context of the alliance with Worcester State University and the Worcester State University Foundation.
  • (E) Serves as a resource to the board and tri boards of Worcester State University to enhance overall understanding of the missions, program, and effectiveness of all Center activities.

Human Resources

With support from the Human Resources Department at Worcester State University:

  • (E) Effectively recruits and manages all craft center personnel who are either Worcester State University or Worcester Center for Crafts employees, including paid staff, contractors, and consultants.
  • (E) Ensures that accurate job descriptions are developed, that performance evaluations are held per union requirements, and that Worcester State University Human Resource practices are in place.
  • (E) Encourages staff development and education.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

· A master’s degree in arts administration, non-profit management, or a related field or a graduate degree in an appropriate visual arts field.

· A minimum of five years cumulative professional experience programming, managing, and marketing arts programs at established public or private organizations.

· Ability to effectively supervise personnel, resolve personnel issues, and conduct performance evaluations.

· Experience with budget planning and management.

· Fundraising experience.

· Ability to write and secure grant funding to support both operating and capital budgets.

· Excellent oral and written communication skills.

· Excellent interpersonal skills.

· Ability to work flexible hours with willingness to work some nights and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:

· Leadership experience in an organization providing arts programs.

· Experience developing and promoting craft programs.

· Demonstrated expertise in historical and contemporary studio craft movements.

· Experience managing active studio programs.

· Experience with public and/or community arts programs.

· Experience with strategic planning and program development.

· Experience with current use of technology and web-enhanced marketing.
