Director of Finance


Headquartered in Cambridge, MA, the American Academy of Arts & Sciences is one of the nation’s most prominent learned societies and independent policy research centers. Each year, the Academy elects approximately 200 new members who are leaders in all fields and professions.

The Academy is currently seeking a Director of Finance to provide oversight and administration of the Academy’s finances, including budgeting, accounting, payroll, tax compliance, investment reporting, and the annual audit.

Responsibilities include:

  • Monitor accounting policies and practices; review, monitor and maintain high standards for internal controls and operational efficiency within the Finance Office and throughout the Academy.

  • Oversee and lead the annual budgeting and projection process; monitor progress and changes and keep management abreast of the Academy’s financial status.

  • Oversee the Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and Payroll process.

  • Oversee the preparation and completion of monthly reconciliations (including all balance sheet accounts), general ledger close and financial reporting

  • Manage long-term investments, spending rule calculation and all endowment reporting.

  • Oversee the budgeting and financial reporting for all grants and contracts;

  • Coordinate with Development staff to accurately plan, account for, and track giving.

  • Maintain the Academy’s insurance policies, administer annual renewals, process insurance claims and stay abreast of new developments in risk management.

  • Lead and coordinate the annual audit process. Manage the relationship with auditors and ensure that recommendations from auditors are assessed and implemented in a timely manner.

  • Compile financial data and reports for different Academy committees including Finance, Investment and Audit.

  • Prepare or monitor the preparation of all relevant tax returns including, payroll, Form 990, Form PC, Form 990-T, Form 1095 and other necessary returns.

  • Analyze all contracts and spending; develop a consistent process for the bidding and selection of vendors to obtain potential savings without sacrificing service.

  • Supervise the accounting manager and the manager of financial reporting.

  • Financial review of the Academy’s for-profit subsidiary,including management of inventory and operating expenses.

  • Provide resource and budget support to departments to support the work of the Academy

  • Bachelors or Masters Degree in accounting or management required. CPA desirable.

  • Minimum of ten years of progressively responsible financial and accounting experience

  • Strong technical background, solid knowledge of accounting and financial principles in a non-profit and/or higher education setting

  • Grant management experience required

  • MIP and expert level Excel spreadsheet required

  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees and management team

  • Ability to build strong and sustainable relationships, and the capability to interact within all levels of the organization as well as with external constituents.

  • Experience overseeing information technology

  • Demonstrated experience and finesse to handle complex situations and multiple responsibilities, mixing long-term projects with the urgency of immediate demands.
