Major Gifts Officer
Under the supervision of the Director of Major Gifts, the Major Gifts Officer (MGO) is a key member of the Major Gifts team responsible for managing a portfolio of major gift donors. The Major Gifts team raises funds from individuals and family foundations who can support WGBH at leadership levels with both directed and unrestricted gifts. The team works closely with WGBH executives and producers, board members and other senior volunteers to raise gifts of $25,000 to $5 million or more in support of WGBH’s institutional priorities.
WGBH is currently in the public phase of The Campaign For WGBH: Leadership in the Digital Century. Launched in 2015, the Campaign has a goal to raise $175 million over five years, and four programmatic priorities: journalism; science; history, drama and culture; and education and children’s media, and has an anticipated completion date of 2020. The Campaign is an all-inclusive effort, targeting directed / restricted, endowment, planned, and risk capital (or Catalyst Fund) gifts to ensure WGBH’s ability to sustain, enhance and build core programs even as it continues to take risks on new ideas. Support—for innovation, experimentation with technology and media, basic R&D, and launch capital—is a primary objective, as is the ability to recruit and retain top talent.
The MGO will carry a portfolio of no less than 125 prospects with potential for six- and seven-figure gifts, and is responsible for the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of those donors within his or her portfolio, as well as the identification and qualification of new major gift prospects. Primary responsibilities include developing and implementing cultivation and solicitation strategies, tracking progress, and staying abreast of existing, new and developing funding opportunities. Other activities include preparing the CEO and other senior staff, as well as high-level volunteers and executive producers regarding strategy.
80% Manage a portfolio of 125+ prospects with potential to make six- and seven-figure gifts. Develop and implement engagement plans to cultivate, solicit and steward current donors and prospects. Identify and qualify (or disqualify) new prospects with the goal of expanding WGBH’s pool of major gift donors. Arrange for and conduct face-to-face meetings and leverage attendance at WGBH events, board meetings, and other community events to advance the institution’s relationship with donors and prospects. Staff the president, VPs, producers and high-level volunteers in solicitation and cultivation meetings. Maintain written and verbal communication with volunteers, donors and prospects. Prepare proposals, briefings and reports.
10% Work with Development Associates and other Major Gifts colleagues to ensure outstanding stewardship of donors, and to make certain that all reporting requirements are met. Develop and leverage appropriate relationships with colleagues in programming units, president’s and VPs’ offices, Budget office, etc.
10% Take advantage of all opportunities to become familiar with the myriad funding needs at WGBH. Attend meetings and workshops, read publications, talk with creative talent and producers. Attend events and committee meetings as needed and assigned.
Candidates should have a minimum of 7 years of development experience with progressively increasing responsibility, with at least 4 of those years demonstrating effectiveness and success in closing in a major gifts. Candidates must possess exceptional skills of written and oral expression and be able to adapt their writing style for all manner of communications including email, formal letters, informal notes, extensive funding proposals, briefings, donor meetings and presentations. The ability to multitask with extreme proficiency, respond nimbly to evolving priorities, and work both independently and as part of a team to achieve goals are all essential, as is a sense of humor. A high degree of energy, creativity and initiative is also paramount.
