The Board of Trustees of the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown has announced its decision to adopt a collaborative leadership model in replacing its current Executive Director, Michael Roberts, who is retiring in December 2018. The Board has created the positions of Co-Executive Directors and is seeking qualified applicants to work as Co-Executive Director with Bette Warner, currently FAWC’s Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer, who will become the other Co-Executive Director upon completion of a successful executive search.
The Co-Executive Director whom FAWC is seeking to hire will be the public face and principal spokesperson for the Work Center. S/he will be a visionary leader who will assume the role of chief development officer of the organization responsible for donor development, with primary emphasis on cultivating new donor prospects; management of the 50th Anniversary Campaign with the remaining $2 million of a 5-year $5 million goal for capital and endowment; and stewardship of the Board of Trustees. FAWC, a 501(c)(3) organization, has annual operating revenue of $1.8 million, approximately half of which is contributed income.
As Co-Executive Director, Bette Warner will continue in her role as the organization’s chief operating officer responsible for operations and administration, including financial management, programs, personnel, events, and marketing.
This Co-Executive Director
is the public face and principal spokesperson for the Work Center. S/he will be a visionary leader who will
assume the role of chief development officer of the organization responsible
for donor development, with primary emphasis on cultivating new donor prospects;
management of the 50th Anniversary Campaign with the remaining $2
million of a 5-year $5 million goal for capital and endowment; and stewardship
of the Board of Trustees. S/he reports to and consults with the President and
Co-Chairs of the Board in discharge of the responsibilities of the position.
Scope of Responsibilities:
- Cultivate a culture of excellence visible
throughout the organization
- Maintain professionalism within the
organization’s staff and consulting personnel
- Ensure compliance with all applicable legal and

Public Face of the Organization
- Serve as the public face and principal
spokesperson of the organization in the community, philanthropic circles
and the media.
- Articulate the vision and mission of the organization,
including its 50th Anniversary Campaign goals, on a local,
regional and national basis
- Participate in active community engagement in
Provincetown to heighten the organization’s public visibility and
cultivate more robust recognition and support
- Serve as the organization’s chief development
officer, with primary emphasis on identifying and cultivating new annual
giving and campaign prospects
- Hire and supervise development staff and
consulting personnel, with input from other co-director.
- Prepare annual budget for development activities
and work with other co-director to set contributed income and expense
- Ensure accountability for all development
revenue and expense items within budget.
- Develop and implement plans for expanded major
donor cultivation in Provincetown, New York, Boston, Los Angeles and San
- Plan strategy and manage implementation of
contributed income priorities with increased targeted income goals: Major
Donors, Trustee Giving, Foundation Grants, Government Grants, Annual
- Support annual fundraising events, providing
assistance to other co-director in the recruitment of event Chairs,
committees, venues, honorees, featured artists, and event supporters.
Attend event committee meetings.
- Lead and support strategic initiatives for the
50th anniversary campaign (see below).
- Work with the Board Development Committee to
schedule Committee meetings, prepare meeting notices, agendas and minutes,
and provide other support as needed
- With other co-director, refine Sponsor
- Work with Community Outreach Coordinator and
other co-director to refine Membership Program.
- Explore funding sources for existing and new
programs, including a post-baccalaureate program in visual arts or
writing, a mid-career mentor program in support of the Fellowship program,
and possible enhancements to the Fellowship program.
Development: 50th Anniversary Campaign
- Work with Steering Committee to review and
revise campaign priorities and budgets for years 2-5, earmarked to raise
remaining $3-5 million.
- Lead and manage strategic initiatives, including
Major Donor and Legacy drives
- Manage the Steering Committee and monthly
- Schedule and implement donor and donor prospect
- Develop and implement plans for Fellowship,
faculty, and student recruitment.
- Assist and guide the Board of Trustees in donor
recruitment, with targeted goals.
- Oversee the tracking of pledges and income and
work with Steering Committee and staff to ensure receipt of income
- Manage availability of capital funds for planned
phases of the campus renovation and improvement projects
- Oversee and manage marketing of 50th
Anniversary Print Portfolios to institutions and collectors
- Work with other co-director and marketing to
develop additional Campaign collateral material.
- Dedicate 1/2 of time to the campaign.
- Serve as chief staff liaison to the Board of
Trustees and the Board’s Executive and Governance Committees
- Lead the Board in ensuring that its governing
documents and policies reflect best practices in effective governance
- Support the Board in assessing board
effectiveness and improving Trustee performance
- Expand opportunities for Board recruitment with
- Identify and explore new Trustee prospects
- Lead and support orientation and training of new
A collaborative management
style is essential. Applicants will have at least 10 years professional
experience in development activities gained in progressively senior positions,
preferably in a non-profit cultural or educational institution, with a
successful track record in raising contributed income similar in amount to that
required by the Fine Arts Work Center. Individuals from the for-profit sector
with the qualities and experience needed to work within a non-profit
organization will also be considered. The successful candidate will convey
excellent communications skills; have prior success leading people, raising
money, and working with Boards; and possess a talent for building trust and
confidence in a broad range of constituencies.

The successful candidate is expected
to reside in Provincetown each year June through September.Year-round presence
in Provincetown is not required, although monthly visits to the Center is
encouraged. Some travel for meetings and events is necessary to cultivate
donors in such cities as New York, Los Angeles, and Miami, among others.
About this Organization:
The Fine Arts Work Center was founded in 1968 by a group of public-spirited artists, writers and patrons, including Stanley Kunitz, Robert Motherwell, Myron Stout, Jack Tworkov and Hudson D. Walker, among others. They envisioned a place in Provincetown, the country’s most enduring art colony, where artists and writers could live and work together in the early phase of their careers amid the unique natural beauty of the Outer Cape.
Since its beginning the Work Center has awarded 1,000 Fellowships and has become one of the premier residencies of its kind. The Fellowship Program runs annually for seven months off-season (October 1-April 30). The Fellowships provide housing, work space, stipends and each other to 20 Fellows selected annually from an applicant pool of some 1,600 emerging artists and writers from the United States and abroad. Work Center Fellows have gone on to number among the most accomplished artists and writers working today, winning MacArthurs, Guggenheims, Whitings, Pollock-Krasners, Tiffanys, Tufts, Prix de Romes, National Book Awards, and eight Pulitzer Prizes.
The extraordinary success of Fellows’ work during the last 50 years is testament to our founders’ vision – that time, space, freedom, and talented peers and mentors are the ideal catalysts for creative growth.
In addition to its flagship Fellowship Program, the Work Center offers open-enrollment workshops in writing and visual arts. Building on a tradition of creative excellence, the Summer Program offers workshops taught by faculty who are among the most respected in their fields and over its history has drawn some 5,000 students. 24PearlStreet connects the Work Center with a global literary community by offering engaging online writing workshops led by nationally recognized poets and writers.
In collaboration with other arts organizations around the country and abroad, the Fine Arts Work Center also hosts one- to three-month Collaborative Residencies for mid-career artists and writers. The Work Center’s Returning Residency Program encourages former Fellows, Collaborative Residents and workshop participants to return to Provincetown during the Work Center’s spring and fall shoulder seasons.
Central to our mission is a continuing contribution to the vitality of arts in Provincetown. The Work Center offers workshops to public school children and seniors taught by Fellows-in residence. Our programming also offers 100 public events, bringing 10,000 annual visitors to Provincetown for readings, artist talks, and exhibitions by nationally recognized artists and writers.
In all of this, the Work Center’s focus is giving creative people the opportunity to work and study in a community of their peers. Hundreds of emerging artists and writers come to the Work Center each year to do this. The Work Center plays a significant, transformative role in their lives as artists and writers.
The Work Center operates with a staff of 13 full- and part-time employees, several seasonal employees and interns, numerous volunteers, and consultants in marketing, tech support, and bookkeeping. Each year over 125 faculty members, all working artists and writers, teach the summer and online workshops. The FAWC Board of Trustees has 45 members, and includes artists, writers, business and community leaders, patrons, collectors, and supporters.
The Program Committees and juries for the Fellowships are comprised of internationally recognized artists and writers. Fellows are accepted entirely on the basis of the excellence of their work. Past jurors include Louise Bourgeois and Martin Puryear for the visual arts and Grace Paley and Mary Oliver for writing.
The Work Center is located in Provincetown, the nation’s oldest art colony. Provincetown offers an environment renowned for its beauty and artistic heritage. Surrounded by dunes and beaches, it provides the idyllic setting for artistic inspiration, creativity and learning. With its unique natural environment and exciting cultural opportunities, Provincetown has inspired artists for generations.
The Work Center is situated on Pearl Street near the commercial center of town on the site of the historic Days Lumberyard, where studios have been offered since 1914 to the likes of Charles Hawthorne, Edwin Dickinson, Ross Moffett, Hans Hofmann, Robert Motherwell and Helen Frankenthaler, among many others. The location of the Fine Arts Work Center on this historic compound provides a communal experience among the Fellows and other residents that is a hallmark of its programs.
Work Center facilities include 30 apartments, 13 large working studios/classrooms, a state-ofthe- art print shop, a woodworking shop, a digital media lab, a Fellows lounge, a computer lab, a large common room, an art gallery and administrative and program offices.
