Design Manager


The Design Manager reports to the Vice President of Marketing and Communications. S/he helps develop and execute the overall marketing and sales campaign for Handel and Haydn Society.This is an opportunity to join a dynamic, hard-working team with the shared goal of increasing the organization's visibility, audience development, and educational outreach. Candidates must have excellent communications skills, be technically savvy, and possess a wide-ranging command of marketing and communications, with attention to detail.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists the Vice President of Marketing and Communications with all aspects of marketing and communications outreach, and with all operational aspects of the department.
  • Helps to reinforce the H&H brand in all communications.
  • Provides design concepts and execution, with an emphasis on collateral, print advertising, signage, and other.
  • Manages and updates the website.
  • Helps manage our customer relationship management program (CRM), Tessitura.
  • Helps manage our social media program, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Hootsuite, and other channels.
  • Helps execute email campaigns.
  • Helps manage program book advertising sales and trades.
  • Under the supervision of the VP, monitors daily revenue goals and department expenses budget. Produces quarterly and annual budget reconciliations.
  • Assists with execution of promotional plans for subscription andsingle ticket campaigns, including advertising, promotions, direct mail, and email communications.
  • Helps manage outside vendors, including design, direct response, public relations, printers, pricing consultants, program book editor, merchandisers, telemarketing, group sales teams, and others.
  • Provides periodic analytic reports, including Tessitura, Google, social media, and other reporting systems.
  • Takes photographs of concerts and events.
  • Supports development and stewardship programs.
  • Supports H+H's Learning and Educational Outreach Programs and Concerts.
  • Performs other duties as needed upon request of the organization.
COMPENSATION: Competitive benefits and salary, commensurate with experience.


  • Minimum of five (5) years of marketing experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in marketing or related field from an accredited university or college.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and public presentation skills required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, integrity, maturity, and good judgment.
  • Systems experience with design software (InDesign and Adobe Creative Suite preferred); website content management system CMS (Wordpress preferred); CRM (Tessitura preferred); social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Hootsuite, etc.); email systems (WordFly and Mailchimp preferred); and spreadsheets (Excel preferred).
  • Experience with a performance arts organization is desirable.
  • Knowledge of Baroque and Classical music and a desire to learn more about historically informed, period-instrument performances is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast paced environment, meet multiple deadlines, organize time and priorities, and work well as a member of the team. Ability to work occasional nights and weekends is a must.
  • Position requires occasional lifting of heavy printed materials, large boxes, and retail merchandise as well as the repetitive, daily use of a computer.

The Handel and Haydn Society is internationally acclaimed for its performances of Baroque and Classical music. Based in Boston, H+H’s orchestra and chorus delight more than 50,000 listeners each year with a ten-concert subscription series at Symphony Hall and other leading venues in addition to a robust program of intimate events in museums, schools, and community centers. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Harry Christophers, the ensemble embraces historically informed performance, bringing classical music to life with the same immediacy it had the day it was written. Through the Karen S. and George D. Founded in Boston in 1815, H+H is among the oldest continuously performing classical music ensembles in the United States and is unique for its longevity, capacity for reinvention, and distinguished history of premieres. H+H began as a choral society founded by middle-class Bostonians who aspired to improve the quality of singing in their growing American city. They named the organization after two composers—Handel and Haydn—to represent both the old music of the 18th century and what was then the new music of the 19th century. In the first decades of its existence, H+H gave the American premieres of Handel’s Messiah(1818), Haydn’s Creation(1819), Verdi’s Requiem(1878), and Bach’s St. Matthew Passion(1879). Since its founding, H+H has given more than 2,000 performances before a total audience exceeding 2.8 million.

In addition to its subscription series, tours, and broadcast performances, H+H reaches a worldwide audience through ambitious recordings including the critically-acclaimed Haydn The Creation, the best-selling Joy to the World: An American Christmas, and Handel Messiah, recorded live at Symphony Hall under Christophers’s direction.
