String Orchestra Director (for immediate hire)

Description:

The mission of Josiah Quincy Orchestra Program (JQOP) is to ensure the long-term musical and social success of all students, and to positively impact them and their families through quality education and performance. JQOP is inspired by El Sistema, the Venezuelan program that uses intensive, joyful, and ensemble-based music instruction to teach children social-emotional skills. In the 2018-19 school year, JQOP will serve 200 students in eight ensembles, including six string orchestras of various levels (beginner to advanced). Supervisor: Program Manager


Commitment: Monday thru Friday, 7:45-9:30AM + concerts

Fall 2018: Immediate Hire – December 20th (no classes Nov. 21-23)

Spring 2019: January 7th – June 14th (no classes Feb. 18-22 and Apr. 15-19)

Compensation: Part-time salary (no benefits), exact amount is dependent upon experience


Position Description: The String Orchestra Director will lead one of JQOP’s six-string ensembles. Each orchestra is comprised of students with a specific playing level, from beginners (1-2 years on instruments, first/second grade) to advanced (5-6 years on instruments, sixth/seventh grade). The String Orchestra Director will follow the JQOP Curriculum and work in collaboration with Support Teaching Artists to select repertoire, plan daily lessons, prepare for concerts, and ensure that students learn appropriate strings technique, music notation, and orchestra culture. Additionally, as JQOP equally supports social development and musical growth, the String Orchestra Director will ensure that social-emotional skills are developed within the fabric of rehearsals and sectionals, including, but not limited to, leadership, kindness, self-control, and perseverance. The String Orchestra Director will work with all JQOP staff and teachers to ensure the highest quality learning experience for all students.


Responsibilities

· Lead a string orchestra of 30-40 students in 3rd-5th grade

· Team teach the following with 1-2 Support Teaching Artists: orchestra repertoire, strings technique, music theory, leadership/mentorship, and social development; context for lessons includes orchestra rehearsals, instrument sectionals, and small-group lessons

· Collaborate with administrative staff and Teaching Artists to create a shared curriculum and pedagogy for the orchestra, as well as ensemble goals and evaluation tools for student progress

· Attend all staff meetings and professional development opportunities offered through the program

· Attend all concerts and community events/performances (gigs) for your ensemble

Qualifications:

· 2+ years experience leading youth orchestras & teaching young string players in a group setting

· Strong knowledge of string pedagogy, repertoire, technique and curriculum development

· Strong teaching and classroom management skills, education background/degree preferred

· Commitment to El Sistema’s philosophy of social change through music instruction

· Passion for teaching and willingness to go above-and-beyond to ensure success for all students

· Strong interpersonal, professional, and communication skills
