Director of Marketing

The Opportunity

Facing History and Ourselves exists to create a world shaped by knowledge and compassion, rather than bigotry or prejudice. Racism, antisemitism, and stereotypes all threaten our next generation at its most vulnerable age of adolescence. Facing History helps teachers create classrooms where students can learn to make ethical decisions with courage and compassion. It helps to build schools that have the capacity to both teach about and model civil society by promoting respect and understanding. The leadership and staff of Facing History have developed a clear plan to dramatically increase impact over the next five years – and given the current climate in our world, its mission could not be more urgent.

Facing History has recently entered the second year of a strategic plan with growth targets of growing our teacher network and doubling our individual donor base. Reporting to the Chief Marketing Officer, the Director of Marketing will be responsible for amplifying the brand, engaging constituents, and delivering integrated marketing campaigns which efficiently deliver meaningful progress toward Facing History’s goals.

The organization

Facing History integrates the study of history and literature with students’ deep reflection on identity, their relationship to larger communities, and their choices about how to participate in society. It works directly with middle and high school teachers, providing innovative teaching strategies, curricular resources, best-in-class professional development, and ongoing coaching. Facing History trusts students to wrestle with complex moments in human history and teaches them to avoid facile moral equivalencies. Successful Facing History students learn that history isn’t inevitable, but is the result of people’s behavior. Demonstrably, students who know that their choices make history turn out to be more rigorous historians, more civically engaged with their peers and society, and more likely to stand up when they see bullying.

Research has shown that Facing History classrooms (found in public, private, parochial, and charter schools) and schools are safe spaces where students’ social, emotional, civic, moral, and historical thinking competencies grow. Facing History’s unique approach to teaching and learning combines evidence-based curriculum materials, a continuum of professional learning services (delivered in person and online), and personalized ongoing follow-up coaching to help middle and high school teachers implement Facing History materials and methods into the classroom. Each Facing History program—whether integrated into classes of social studies and literature, or used as curriculum for stand-alone electives – is built around a core methodology that helps students explore the complexities of history and human behavior and consider how they can make a difference as engaged moral citizens. This approach has been proven to promote students’ historical understanding, critical thinking, empathy, and social-emotional learning. Facing History today has grown to 9 offices, in the United States, Canada, and the UK, with 175 staff members, and an annual operating budget of approximately $30 million.
