Music Teacher


The primary task of the Music Teacher is the instruction of the students. Because of the overlapping nature of the learning disabilities and behavior disorders of the students, responsibilities are broad and include generic responsibilities shared by all professional staff. This position is part-time – 20 hours per week.

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of duties and responsibilities that will be required of positions given this title, but additional responsibilities may be required. Employees are expected to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

Essential Functions:

  • Plan and implement all music education classes according to Curriculum Frameworks.
  • Preparation of daily or weekly lesson plans.
  • Develop skills in voice, instruments and music appreciation to culminate in two program wide performances.
  • Assessment and diagnoses of levels and specific needs of students by way of observation, formal and informal assessment, and ongoing recording of individual student's performance.
  • General compliance with Federal and State regulations in cooperation with and at the direction of the Director of Education. This includes assessments and quarterly reports.
  • Attendance at supervision meetings with Clinical Supervisor.
  • Assist in extracurricular after-school and summer activities as scheduled.
  • Assist the Director of Education and Curriculum Coordinator in the design of methods for evaluating curriculum and establishing policies regarding the operation of the school program.
  • Maintain and increase his/her effectiveness in behavior management and communicating with other professional staff through the use of training, supervision, and consultation.
  • Degree in Music Education
  • Massachusetts DESE Certification required. (K-8)
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle safely, strongly preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential in conjunction with computerized literacy.
  • Strong organizational and motivational abilities.
  • Must be receptive and responsive to supervision and professional development.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies quickly and safely.
  • Ability to work in a stressful and fast paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Evidence of sensitivity and respect for client’s culture and socioeconomic characteristics.
  • Physical ability to provide therapeutic physical restraint.
  • Visual and hearing acuity to perform job related functions
