Senate Education Staff report to the Director of Visitor Experience & Program Development, are responsible for assisting in the facilitation of the Senate Immersion Module Program, including semi-scripted role-playing of party whips, expert witnesses, Senate staffers, and others. They will also perform roles as current and historical Senators in our live theatrical programs, including Today’s Vote (contemporary legislation), Great Senate Debates (historic legislation and oratory), and Future Senator (elementary school program). SE will also conduct floor interpretation experiences with school groups, adult groups, and general visitors. This is a part-time per diem position with a flexible schedule.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate and assist in SIM program

  • Perform roles as needed in both historic and contemporary SIM, Great Senate Debates, Today’s Vote, Future Senator, and other role-playing and immersive experiences

  • Ensure that the standards of excellence set by EMK Institute are reflected in the daily presentation of the SIM, tours, interpretation, and other programs.

  • Participate in ongoing training to ensure consistent quality of performances


Qualifications and Skills:

  • High school diploma or equivalency required. Experience with museums or hands-on learning environments preferred not required

  • Must have good overall attendance, work ethic, and attitude to work as part of a team

  • Enthusiasm to educate and inspire the next generation of American leaders

  • Should have a passion for conveying senate history to diverse audiences and communities

  • An interest in civic, democracy, and making a difference in the lives of young people is helpful

  • Creative, engaging personality with the ability to exhibit the gravitas necessary for performing particular roles in EMK programs

  • Must have good overall attendance, work ethic, and attitude to work as part of a team

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Experience working with students or adults in a hands-on learning environment or living history setting

  • Ability to communicate skillfully with people of varying ages, language skills and physical abilities

  • Ability to interpret and apply the information you learn

  • Fluency in English, strong verbal skills, and ability to communicate clearly and engagingly with guests and colleagues (Fluency in Spanish is a plus)

  • Ability to effectively engage institute guests, present information and respond to questions from like-age and mixed-age groups of all ages

  • Maintain a professional work attitude and act with the highest standards of respect and courtesy

  • The ability to think on one’s feet to troubleshoot issues that may arise in working with large groups of students

  • An interest in and basic working knowledge of politics, government, and the legislative process

  • Comfort working in a collaborative, technology-based environment

  • Experience working with varied audiences: students, teachers, faculty, administrator, state and local officials in role play, educational, or museum learning environments

  • Foster a spirit of collaboration and cooperation in working with all institute colleagues, volunteers, and interns

  • Willingness and ability to work some nights and weekends as necessary

  • Availability on weekday mornings, particularly Thursday and Friday preferred (staff can expect to work 8-16 hrs a week depending on the EMK programming schedule)

  • Ability to pass a criminal background check is required

Ideal Candidate:

At least 1 year of relevant work experience preferred, some of which should be in a hands-on learning environment, school setting, or working directly with students in an educational or performance setting. Previous public speaking, improvisational or theatre background is a plus.
