MIT Museum Studio Assistant (temporary, 9/17-6/18)
Provide assistance in running the Studio, e.g.,
promoting and running events; facility maintenance and exhibit installation; and
assist students with engineering design, use of design software and rapid
prototyping tools in the Studio and at other MIT facilities.
The MIT Museum Studio connects MIT students with
the unique learning opportunities of the MIT Museum. Students draw on the Museum’s
rich resources—collections, interpretive galleries, staff knowledge and visitor
feedback—as they pursue original technology projects for experimental
exhibition at the Compton Gallery and to advance the multi-sensory learning
environment of the MIT Museum. The Studio combines a project workspace and
experimental exhibition gallery. Activities range from project conceptual
development and experimentation, to prototyping, engineering and exhibition
design and installation. The Studio also hosts programs such as lectures, film
screenings and workshops.
Technical responsibilities include use of basic
rapid-prototyping tools and techniques such as laser-cutting, 3D printing,
water-jetting, machining, as well as a range of programming, from basic (e.g.,
for Arduino, Ras. Pi) to more advanced control-engineering projects.
Work schedule: 11 a. m. to 7 p.m. preferred. Must
be available to work occasional evenings and weekends.
Required: Knowledge of engineering/mechanical
design, design software, tool use ranging from hand to machine and rapid
prototyping tools; familiarity with MIT rapid prototyping and shop facilities a
plus; prior experience with projects common to the Studio: small mechanical and
electro-optical devices; low-level device control software; Mac and Windows
based software. Experience in art and design methods and/or museum exhibition,
programs and media a plus.
